The invention of the chocolate chip is often attributed to Ruth Graves Wakefield, who, along with her husband Kenneth Wakefield, owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, during the 1930s. Legend has it that in 1937, Ruth was making a batch of her popular Butter Drop Do cookies when she ran out of baker’s chocolate. In a creative move, she substituted broken pieces of Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate bars, hoping they would melt and spread throughout the cookie dough. Instead of melting completely, the chocolate pieces retained their shape, resulting in the creation of the first chocolate chip cookies.
The cookies were an instant hit with Toll House Inn customers, and Ruth’s recipe was published in a Boston newspaper. As a result, sales of Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate bars skyrocketed, and Nestlé eventually struck a deal with Ruth Wakefield. In 1939, Nestlé began producing chocolate chips, and Ruth’s recipe was printed on the back of the package. This partnership led to the iconic Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe that is still enjoyed by millions today.
