Chongqing Welcomes the Year of the Rabbit with a Grand Light-Drone-Fireworks Performance

Chongqing- As a Chinese tradition, Lunar New Year’s Eve is a time to bid farewell to the past year and celebrate the arrival of the New Year with a variety of grand events. January 22 marks the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Rabbit. On the evening of the 21st, Chongqing, a megacity in southwestern China region, the celebration culminated in a grand party named “New Era, New Journey, New Chongqing”, where a large number of people came out to enjoy an unparalleled light-drone-fireworks show.

We managed to get everything for you tonight. Below was the schedule of the event. We packaged the video to show the highlights of this beautiful event. Hosted by Alex and Julija.

Fantastic Light Art Show
At 23:20, the Light Art Show started first. Forty pieces of light artwork by top artists from 16 countries, including China, Italy, France, and Germany, were presented one by one through 3D Mapping technology. They used digital light as the brush, and urban architecture as the paper, and painted a colorful scroll with different regional cultures.

Technological Drone Show
At 23:28, 3,000 drones rose into the air, and a drone theme show with a width of more than 200 meters and a height of more than 100 meters shone on the stage. The drone matrix transformed three chapters of “Magnificent Landscape”, “Driving to Spring”, and “The Giant Ship Sails” through the transformation of different color combinations. The scenes such as starry night, local landscape, monorail, “New Era, New Journey, New Chongqing” caption, and ship sailing were “drawn” by different combinations of drones, showing that a new chapter of Chongqing has been opened.

Unique Building Light Show
At 23:40, the decorative lights on each building were lit up, creating a visual feast like a dream through lights, lasers, videos, and music. Chongqing has big mountains and rivers, building up a multi-dimensional city landscape, and the night scene is famous all over the world. The streets, bridges, buildings, etc., will wear charming coats at night, attracting visitors worldwide to admire its beauty.

Passionate Fireworks Show
At 23:50, the fireworks show was finally staged. It was divided into three parts: 10 minutes before New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Eve countdown, and 10 minutes after New Year’s Eve, and it lasted for 20 minutes. The fireworks bombs were loaded on eight cargo ships on the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, and the fireworks were dynamic and colorful, lighting up the night sky. The fireworks brought together the city’s “mountains, rivers, city, and sky” into one of the most beautiful pictures of the night.

The fireworks bloom, the crowds cheer, and the lively scenes make Chongqing people believe that the city will be more prosperous and progressive in 2023.

  1. Ok let’s talk about this fireworks show, seriously. Despite the fact that this is the first time for Chongqing to have such activity at this scale, estimated over a million people have shown up at the scene, their crowd management performance was terrible, at least 30,000 was gated under a overpass next to the grand theater where views were blocked by either train station or the interchange north of the Qiansimen Bridge, police officers was told not to open the access to the bridge to the public resulting many were trapped under the interchange with zero views. Couple citizens got pushed by the police officers and small conflict did happen while officers trying to get into the station, zero planning and not enough training, many auxiliary officers (non formal police officers) were taking pictures with there body blocking the view of many people, zero consideration for the public and absolute not obeying their duty, many swear words was heard also.

CRT, Chongqing Rail Transport had no specialized training and planning with event like this, line 6 and loop line’s train gapping is roughly over 5 minutes meaning that many people are not able to move out of the event area in time, just imagine having to wait 5 trains to get on, yep not joking. From station to train took just over 40min, brilliant!

Buses in Chongqing did not participate in this event, again people only had limited public transport options, either rail or foot. I have a friend took a private hire to home with a cost of 400bucks.

Lastly, CQTV our local television station was responsible for broadcasting live footage from the scene, however they chose to use 5G network for images transmission, and the result is their laggy footage was seen by many who didn’t choose to go see the fireworks in person. Zero preparation and no effort of professionalism.

Overall the firework was amazing but the experience was terrible, personal experience was that London has done way better in emergency management and crowd control, Chongqing still has a lot more to learn.
