The village of Tombo has lived from fishing for centuries. But now that way of life is under threat. Chinese trawlers are overfishing coastal areas with their modern fishing methods, leaving stocks depleted.
The village of Tombo in Sierra Leone has flourished since the pre-colonial era. Its population lives from fishing and wants this natural resource to feed future generations. But prosperity levels have been declining in recent years, due to the influx of Chinese trawlers overfishing the coastline – often with the clandestine backing of corrupt officials.
The men of the village are often forced to give up fishing in Tombo and seek employment in other countries. Their wives and daughters, most of whom earn a living sorting the catch and selling it at the market, are also finding themselves without work. The situation has been further exacerbated by natural catastrophes and the coronavirus lockdown.
Despite the adversity, the people of Tombo are trying to keep their families and community together. Their individual battles reflect the ecological and economic problems facing West Africa.
Fatmata has been a single mother since her husband left the village. He now has two new wives abroad and doesn’t send home any money for their son. Suliaman is a born-and-bred fisherman. But when his father blames him for the increasingly meagre catch, he decides to seek his fortune outside Sierra Leone. As spokesperson for the fishing association, Wudie attempts to unite the village community in the face of mounting challenges.

My father grew up in Tombo. My grandfather was a fisherman. I used to pick crabs off that beach as a child and now there aren't any. Sadly, its more than the death of fishing, its the death of the whole ecosystem.
This is the same problem Philippines 🇵🇭 have on the West Philippine Sea. Fishing industry has died and fish has gone bye bye due to Chinese poaching. China is a world menace and needs to be stopped now

We were talking about it yesterday with my daughter that the people in the UK we complain a lot but not look at what good our government is doing, have help with money, free healthcare, even dental treatment is free to those who are not working, free housing if you are not working. If you combine all that you can see the government does try but people don't appreciate it

This is why I keep warning my fellow Africans about the danger of unchecked Chinese involvement in our countries. The Chinese do not care about local economies. They also care less about corruption and mismanagement and not to talk about democracy and human rights. But they are very good at spreading lies and propaganda about the West. But our leaders are fine with all this as long as they are able to increase their foreign bank accounts.

Thanks for highlighting the problems of Sierra Leone Fisher folk. I am saddened of their plights. Their communal way of living are being destroyed by these large Chinese boats that deplete the resources of the seas and send them into further poverty. Overfishing and raking the traditional sea areas where they usually harvest their 🐟 is just pure unadulterated evil.
How can the citizens survive and feed themselves ? These large Chinese boats take all the best fish stocks even baby fish and place them in tin cans in factories,while people starved !!!
This is not right by any means. Where is the United Nations in all the glaring occurrences ? Whole villages are dying, employment and rituals are lost. Something must be done and the political heads with corrupt officials should be removed from office. They are not doing the people any good. I am so sad.

I have been to and worked in China many times and seen Chinese in Africa, South America and Sri Lanka; China is eating the whole world and everybody does not care whilst addicted to cheap gadgets; I love the Chinese people, their government scares me more than Russia or anyone else. China is not a free society but, unlike Russia, it has made a lot its population more wealthy. China exploits poor countries by giving them loans whilst sending their own workers to do the work, so there is no transfer of skills. China scares me because it is eating the world…

Countries should fish their own waters. It should include international waters too. When China takes all the fish, everyone starves. If any country, doesn’t manage their own fisheries, it’s on them.
