Child tax credit change leaves parents owing the IRS for first time

Tax season just started but many people are up in arms after a change to the federal child tax credit left them owing money to the IRS.

“This is the first time that I’ve ever been taxed that high,” one parent said. “I mean, it was like at least $2,000. My taxes were like $3,000. And hey, I don’t make that kind of money.”

Reg Davies, a Charlotte-based accountant, says many others can expect a similar surprise when they file their 2023 tax return. He says a change in the child tax credit took the credit from $3,000 to $2,000. He says there are other factors leading to people getting a smaller refund this year, too.

Apps like Cash App, Venmo and PayPal are requiring users to file for in-app transactions, and sometimes, those that aren’t business-related could fall into the tax pile, depending on the size of the transaction. #Money #Taxes #irs

  1. We are all literally paying over 50% taxes. You get taxed on payroll just to be taxed on the money you were already taxed on and then taxed at the end of the year on the money that's been taxed multiple times. Wow this government is just great!! 🤣🤣

  2. I am scared to file … we always owe even with kids … this government thinks what you make it what you have … they don't take in that we have bills … we pay taxes on our properties , mortgage payments , utilities, car payments , car insurance , health insurance , children's activities or schooling ( if you have kids) … I am hoping we don't owe much but i have a bad feeling we will ugh …

  3. Yea it was messed up! Normal CTC is 2,000 and we have gotten that back each year except when they used it for the pandemic. So this year to my surprise we only get 1,600 plus the $60 they took out for taxes… like wtf! Why do we owe $400 where did that go??? I know a lot of people are wondering that.

  4. Paying taxes is the slavery system. We are the ones that lost the Civil War they. This is a 100% Google it You can check this out. Google it. We really lost The Civil War Way back when it happened. People think we really WON. Civil war But the truth is, we lost it and order for us to say that we wanted. They said you have to pay us tax for the rest of eternity, and we'll say you won that's how The Irs and the tax system came about.. Ladies and gentlemen are not lying to you until the gods on the street. That's the real way of how it became. We never won nothing. Dumb people are gonna say bullshit lying. I don't know what I'm talking about. No, you're bullshit and I know what I'm talking about. The system you've been taught was a fraud was nothing but a lie to keep you in the dark. All of it, you've been told your whole life. Was a lie when it comes from their mouth and the big media. I'm not planning. I have nothing to gain. I'm telling you the truth.

  5. Can we claim all the illegals as dependence? We feed them, we clothe them, we give them housing, and we paid for all their basic needs. Every Americans should be able to have at least 150 illegals on their tax returns.

  6. If things were so great under Trump or Biden, we'd not be so divided. It's going to take a decade to straighten out the problems both have created here. Considering that we have two old rich corrupt dudes running for POTUS in 2024, that most don't want, It's easy to see why we're going downhill. Take better care of American families and bring back a Middle Out Economics Structure.

  7. I shelter and take care of my children And Doctors appointments, gas, bills, and mandatory three meals a day for my entire family on a tight budget. The child care tax is paying us back what we already spent and we are bringing in the next generation of the work force unlike single ppl with no intention to procreate. If you're not having kids you're just here until you die. Hate to say it but it's true. Then y'all can just skip meals, not go to to doctor appts or pay for insurance, skip work and pick up work whenever you want and live with your parents. Quit crying. We shouldn't pay the same bc we aren't the same. I said what I said .

  8. I don’t know why ppl stress about paying taxes just file exempt you’re gonna owe them anyway. Who can afford to pay taxes when the economy is out control? Who can afford to pay money that we have no control over how it’s being spent??? Yall better keep your federal and state money bc if you’re gonna owe them at least owe bc you didn’t pay taxes. They are abusing us in so many ways financial abuse is at the top of the list

  10. One of the biggest issues is the age limit for the $2,000 child tax credit. Children have to be 16 or younger in order to get the larger credit of $2,000 per child. For parents with kids that are 17 & 18 years old, they only receive the reduced $500 amount.
