We know how SpaceX intends to get people to Mars, but what happens when they get there? How do you start a self sustaining colony?

Why not combine the reflected light with the skylight? Day lengths are almost the same. A stroke of very good luck.
There will be tens of Starshps involved
Using a couple as habitats will definitely happen
Anyone that thinks Elon Musk is concerned with going to Mars is an absolute moron. SpaceX exists for the sole purpose of supporting Starlink.
Definitely one of my most favourite videos from you Angry. I loved this one, its futuristic, realistic, and graspable for everyone. We will see something like this in our lifetimes. Please do more of these and go in detail maybe a 10 Episode series of the mars base. Food, fuel, power, homes, location, and who know what. JUST DO IT Please!
I've said it once and I'll say it again we can't live on Mars END OFF
I wonder if a space elevator is feasible on Mars?
Soe great progress on dealing with radiation with both design and siting in a crater.
Vales MArinaris is the best choice! FLAT OUT! NOTHING ELSE is remotely as good!!! Think of elevation or lack there of. What do you get when you are BELOW the level surface of the ground??? HIGHER AIR PRESSURE!!! It might be high enough down in the bottom for humans to walk around without anything more than a coat and an oxygen bottle! I've looked many times for data on the air pressure at the bottom and found nothing. All you ever find is that at the surface air is .05% of Earth at sea level. This is much too low for humans without at least some minimal protection, but there is no need for a full on pressurized suit. All you really need is a tight fitting full body suit that keeps your skin under a few PSI. Beyond that, whatever keeps you warm and would provide a bubble of air around your head is all that is needed on the Mars surface most anywhere. In the Valley you will find water there. Water does flow down hill so the lowest point is the best option! You have the best protection from whatever might happen up on the surface. If you do need to tunnel under ground, very tall vertical walls abound! IF there is a place on Mars where life native or imported has the BEST chances of survival it IS in the bottom of Mariner Valley! WHY no missions have gone there is a total mystery!!!
Starship to anywhere then parking as a house is extremely cheap and effective. Make one that's "made" for that and send more for the old back and forth action. Easy peasy lemon squezy
Reusing Starship would be limited by the ISRU propellant production.
The equipment to do it would be heavy and inefficient to transport.
Any kind of mining is exhausting, drills, pump liners and cutting edges get destroyed at a rapid rate and things need a lot of maintenance and spares.
Mining will require specialists, who replace scientists on missions.
Scientists won't want to waste time on mining and propellant making – any hour spent mining is an hour of the science mission lost.
Doing ISRU would be a challenge with sensible propellants, but with cryogenic liquids, you triple your hassle.
Sending propellants from Earth could well turn out to be easier in the early years.
Some very nice hab concepts there, the greenhouse that uses reflected light to grow plants while blocking radiation with regolith is pretty sweet…. 🙂
Inflatable habitats are probably the best way to start out
GIVE UP ON THE STUPID SUNGLASSES 🙄
Exploration of Mars and beyond will be done only through robotics. It is delusional to think there will ever be a human colony, self sustaining or otherwise, in the foreseeable future. We should focus on how not to regress backwards here on Earth.
I'm committed to a multiplanetary society.
That should be a very big concern.
For example
The same rock and it's followers ended the dinosaurs.
Or I would put it . Don't have all your eggs in one basket which is our current state of living .
A true fact was raised today in an interview on X . The opportunity for the Human species is in this window. The studies carried out on the ISS is paying off .
Otherwise my biggest problem is how we choose to get their. Nuclear Rockets are not for humans because of the amount shielding required makes it not feasible. I also prefer a hybrid solution using Wernher Von Braun's system adapted with a hybrid assist because it's easier to produce and find the fuels already discovered on other celestial bodies.
That's why I will continue to fight for this because discovering what every space agency didn't is what I have to bring to the table.
It has to deal with pulse detonation propulsion with boost and an important factor missed . The goal started simple, escaping earth's gravity directly but as I worked the numbers, refueling became a joke . Btw one major difference in my own vs the F1 power of the Saturn V , Wernher's baby was indeed handmade and the only way my own can be conceived is by 3D printing. It has to be uniformed because any other way ,it ends in disaster. Safety first protocols and learning from those that assist this program is instrumental. 30 years plus of studying means no new inventions required for this to be achieved.
My ending quote is H.E.M.P which stands for Human Evolution Making Progress
Or our favorite. I'll stay ANGRY until they get it right 😂
🍻
A, one more thing! 😮 What about waste products; we need to study that Martian soil to ascertain if it bodes well with processed human waste. Excuse the pun: Food for thought 😮!🤫🧐🤔😳😆💩👽 23:00
It is very unlikely that the first manned expedition to Mars will be permanent, likely just a scouting and gathering data fpr future plans. It will be several more expeditions before they are ready for the first self-sustaining permanent colony is established. Also, if improvements in AI work out, they might not need close "telerobotics", the AI robots can figure things out on their own.
it's funny how all those Mars plans are made while starship is not yet capable of anything and most likely never will be.
Just build underground just like Aliens have done on Earth 😮🤫👽🛸😬🥳
I expect SpaceX to send a machine developed by Boring company and create underground habitat and roads. I expect them to make vehicles derived from Tesla technologies. I don't expect wide use of inflatable habitat and 3d printing regolith for habitat. I don't know why anybody would assume that Starship must be a reusable rocket transport system. SpaceX built a factory for making space ships. They can make different versions for different missions. There can be cargo starships, moon lander starships, tanker starships, mars lander systems like described here. Starships designed for Earth Mars cycler, Starships deisigned for heavy transport of equipment to mars and designed to be repurposed into initial infrastructure on mars, etc. etc. The ship factory can build things very quickly.
Starship would be a good delivery truck and construction shelter while you build a proper base, but it just doesn't work for long-term use as a base
I would like to see a lava tube used as base.
Music was a bit too high on this one
