Saw a mac studio base for £1300 it had sold, what a bargain.
Love my 5k iMac 2020 i9 5700xt. However, the lack of 10-bit video encoders really does take a toll on the workflow. I spend hours creating proxies before I can effortlessly edit my A7IV footage. Great machine tho!
I bought a brand new iMac 2020 that almost fully spec out (i9, nano-coating screen, 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT with 8GB of GDDR6 memory & 1TB) that cost USD1500. I needed one Desktop computer as i always work from home. The export time is way faster than My M1 Macbook Air(16gb & 512gb storage).
The weird part is that, it booted up slower than my iMac 2019 (i9, 48GB RAM, Vega 46GPU and 512GB storage) which i couldn't figure it out why.
Other than that, it doesn't affect my workflow at all.
If you only use it for web browsing, photo editing and illustrator. It's a good choice for work from home!
What about the iMac Pro?
My 2020 5k 27" iMac is my main machine – use it all day, every day, and it can handle pretty much anything. I use it to make a living as an illustrator, using Cinema 4D, Photoshop, Designer…. so if anyone says it's only good for light web browsing – I laugh in your face! Upgraded the RAM to 72GB, cheap and easy, have everything I need open all the time, no probs. If you can get one for <$1000 do it! It's still a solid machine. I won't upgrade till I see a Mac with an M3 at the same price I paid for this iMac.

I upgrade one of these imacs with a sata ssd every couple of weeks. Once the ssd is installed, performance is great. the 2017 and 2019 models are still fully supported with ventura etc.. the 2020 has the ssd on the motherboard and cannot be easily upgraded.
The iMac for music production is a beast. A lot of ram is needed for long sessions and lots of virtual instruments. M1 is ok for portability and in site recordings in my case.
So i bought a 21.5” iMac in 2019, 4K, intel i5, 6core 6thread, 16gb ram, 1Tb SSD and paid over $2K for it, looked to see what it is worth in trade in value and Apple will offer $160.00
I listened to you 2 years ago when you recommended this same computer-I had some music hardware/software that didn't support AS (I still have one biggie that doesn't support it yet) I got the 3.8 cpu version and upgraded to 64GB and it's still running strong although I paid about $2500 for the base model.
Max, I like your channel but I hate seeing these type of videos. For a channel that makes money of the views you get, you should be giving back to your community by giving away this $500 computer to one of your subscribers.
Since we all know that money used to buy this computer was provided by your viewers. So instead of trying to make an extra 500 bucks consider a giveaway to your community.

Can you use this as a monitor and what would be the configuration you would recommend if one can find it?
Not to mention with Luna display, you can get 5K30 or 4K60 external wireless monitor support. You can also get an egpu to boost the iMacs performance and even play windows games in 5k with boot camp. Of course, this isn’t as good as a $500 PC, but it’s still no slouch.

You should show the benchmarks of the 2020 iMac 27” with the 10 core i9 and 5700 XT 16GB GPU. The i9 multi core beats the M1 and M2 and the Metal score on the 5700XT 16GB smokes the M1 and M2. So the iMac is still a very capable Mac.

A well-configured 2020 5K iMac is still going to be well more than $500. In any case, I was actually considering a lower end one as a replacement for my much older Intel-based system; however, I changed my mind because I felt as though it didn't make sense to drop several hundred dollars on another piece of aging hardware. I know the 5K screen is rightfully the selling point for many users (that, and the AIO form factor and included peripherals), but that's beside the drawbacks of Intel chips. Single-core performance on Apple Silicon is much better, and that performance is delivered by a chip that uses single-digit wattage during idle and produces very little heat. In my opinion, the worst aspect of any good computer is fan noise… and I can very confidently say that that is virtually a non-issue when it comes to Apple Silicon Macs. I prefer AIO Macs, but I'm loving my M2 system because it quietly and efficiently delivers more power CPU-wise than MOST Intel-based Macs can.
Preface: The following is intended as humor, so please read it as such and do not take it the wrong way. It’s supposed to make me seem like a know-it-all who’s greatest joy in life is pointing out other people’s flaws and showing everybody how smart he is, while unintentionally exposing some major flaws of his own that are obviously worse (and much more annoying) than the mistake he is calling out in his post. I fully understand mistakes happen, and this one was pretty easy to make, and did not materially change the overall point of the video. So I just wanted to make light of it a little, but I also want to make sure nobody takes it the wrong way. I love this channel, and I’m a subscriber (as long as YouTube didn’t unsubscribe me like it periodically does to many of my subs), and it is rapidly becoming one of my very favorite, most watched tech channels. Guys, if you still read comments, keep up the great work. Way to absolutely redefine excellence in a YouTube tech channel. I’m a big fan! And I can’t decide which one of you I like better, so great job both of you! (I’ve tried this before without this little note, hoping naively that people would get what I was trying to do. So at the risk of ruining the joke to some extent, and certainly ruining my goal for some readers with similar senses of humor to me should have a read that evolves through a range of thoughts and feelings toward the poster until they finally realize at some point that it is a somewhat disguised joke post. But that couldn’t happen if the post was taken down either, so here we are. Built up to disappoint. Just how I like it.

I’m not saying I don’t appreciate the effort, but I have to point out that, as crazy as things sometimes seem, we are still living in reality, as opposed to a fantasy, or to the metaverse, or any other kind of man-made, artificial (or “virtual”) reality, in which math could work however we choose for it to work as long as we are the ones writing the code or generating the fantasy. But in the reality that we all live in and experience every day as we live our lives, the actual, hallucinated representation potentially of 2D information projected into a 3D format which, together with multiple other overlapping or simultaneously coexisting dimensional layers which we cannot perceive such that if an accurate, analogous (by necessity), entirely visible, scale model representation of the whole could be created, the part of reality that we can perceive and experience would appear to be merely the proverbial tip of the iceberg, (pardon my extremely ignorant, no doubt somewhat inaccurate, and almost certainly terribly insufficient description of this complicated concept which, not to make excuses, but I’m pretty sure that no human really fully understands or comprehends), saying that the new Apple Silicon sporting Mac Mini exports 8k R3D to UHD three times faster than does the Intel Processor equipped 2020 iMac doesn’t make the Mac Mini feel any less mini than saying it does it two times faster. It’s just a non-sentient, non-feeling, non-living machine with no capacity to experience this universe or to care about anything, and therefore it cannot feel “mini” in the first place, much less some subjectively assigned, assumed to be negative and harmful to the nonexistent psyche of the machine, quantitative value of “mininess” which one could morally object to the machine being caused to feel, which it cannot, and therefore the whole thing is mute even if it weren’t a ridiculous concept to apply to even to experiential beings. And therefore there is no need to even get into the more ridiculous justification for the prerequisite moral outrage necessary to persuasively argue for even the slightest scintilla of a rationally derived reason for changing the way mathematics works or how its resulting equivalencies should be expressed or altered, or for changing the way rational, logically derived, presumably reasonably accurate, descriptive information should be altered and thereby falsified for the benefit of the individual Mac Mini (which is an irrational concept on its face), for the benefit of the collective group of Mac Minis (which is an irrational concept on its face), or for the benefit of society (which, while a rational concept, no such benefit is apparent or seems likely to exist, or certainly not to any significant extent, and it’s downright ridiculous to even entertain the possibility that if such a benefit were to exist it could possibly come close to the level necessary to even have a conversation about whether it would justify changing the way mathematics works, etc.), this “more ridiculous justification” that need not be addressed, as just stated, being to change how “mini” people feel or perceive the Mac Mini to be, and the resulting theoretical negative impact on Mac Minis or society, as described in more detail and five-finger choke slammed above hard enough to gain the admiration of a dedicated S&M junky. Just trust me on that last one. I did, after all, not only write, but also post this . . . thing that can’t be polished. At least that’s what a wise proverb states, and who am I to argue with Confusus? Or was it it Kung Foos Us? Nope. Wrong and wrong. I looked it up.

I'm still running my 2015 27" iMac and it's awesome! I still use it to game (Dying Light, Borderlands 2, Tomb Raider (all 3), Arkham City, and so much more). I can even edit my Canon R6 Mark II 10 bit Clog3 60p 4.2.2 footage without too much difficulty (it's not buttery smooth but it's doable). I get full 24 fps playback on the timeline (not with effects but with basic LUT or colour space transform).

I have a 2017 27 inch iMac i7 snd a 14’ MBP base model. Between the 5k display, the 24gb Ram and 2 TB Fusion Drive on the iMac, the iMac still feels more luxurious to use, and I have room for all my Logic plugins including those with large sample libraries. With only 512 gig storage on the a MacBook Pro, I can only install a subset of my plugins. Both are great computers. I like that I can take the MBP anywhere. It has plenty of battery life and useful ports.
