Distant Worlds 2, I am one of the folks that gave this game a less than complimentary review. The game is not as immersive as a space game could be and like other space-based games in my experience have been, including Distant Worlds: Universe. It was an expensive purchase for me, and I really was looking forward to a premium experience and I got from it was "meh" game play. I never felt engaged in the play and when I saved and exited the game, I rarely gave it any further thought. IMHO, the game sounds are often just plain annoying, of course this is a subjective opinion but either way, I paid $40USD and the game is sitting on my drive gathering virtual dust. I couldn't find an engaging storyline to get into and play. The game seems like a plethora of disconnected management tasks that you can manage yourself or have the game's AI do it for you, what's the point? Big, beautiful, and boring. Also, at the time I was playing the Steam forum had someone the participated on the forum but kinda behaved like one of the devs trying to manipulate the conversation, I never got the bad taste out of my mouth on that.
These latest games have been so underwhelming.
DW2: wake me up when it surpasses DW:U.
All the strategy games that are just wanna be Civ games with a very cluttered map (a la Endless games).
The shitty remakes, like MoM, which just aren't there (and do read the line above).
Everything so un-immersive, so bland and yet so flashy at the same time.
The Dwarf Fortress Steam move was a good one, and the tiles look ok, I suppose. But it's the same game (as was expected). At least that didn't disappoint.
The last amazing thing to come out was Shadow Empire, but its DLC was also a downer.
Lacking creativity, copying each others products – and not the best parts – unable to add anything truly new and remarkable, and selling expensive DLC that not only aren't all that, but should have been shipped with the base game.
Das, when looking at steam screenshots you can click the Download full version button and it will open a larger version of the image in your internet browser.
DW2 I read a couple of recent negative reviews on steam which would have been valid before the last big update but are out of date now and maybe same in comments here. Perhaps lagged response or just "spleen" but those will kill sales. I would have been one of them if I had not seen an earlier cast by you which did not solve my problems but encouraged another go and by Scott who did not explain what I got wrong either but his screen shots told me I was missing key things and where to look.
It is a shame that so many gave up as having learnt from that the last 2 runs really only have minor problems and I am currently fighting a 2nd Feline race v Amphibian war where tactics of two sides (shield turtling v fighter raiders) could not be more different with a need to adapt and have detailed build strategies.
Key things I missed:. 1. how vital setting home world tax rate to medium asap is in order to have reasonable growth and technology (those numbers near the bottom on first tab economy page down need to be white not red and one early tutorial by a third party was very wrong on this ), 2. the need to give high priority to Caslon fuel logistics in every aspect (and there is so much to that for example using a Roman style strategic defence strategy but instead based on fuel depots). Also picking decent setting combinations and ones that give them ownership of the civilization (I do zero tech for player and galaxy, and distant weak respawning pirates). For starters also low independent colony, high habitable colonies, good start systems and turtle a bit before exiting system in case there are too many pirates then you get the chance to learn middle game.
A couple of action points though – Tankers work (contrary to adverse comments on steam) but not for high (or even mediocre) speed fleet turnaround, disabled ship deletion should be allowed.
