Charcoal, Colored Pencil, and White Chalk Techniques

“I have made some changes to the drawing by adding color to the eyes and highlights.”
Below are some helpful tips for charcoal drawing:

– Draw the head and features lightly with a charcoal pencil or vine charcoal.
– Apply powdered charcoal with a brush to create shadows and mid-tones. Blend with a stump or finger. Erase some charcoal for highlights.
– Use compressed charcoal or charcoal pencils to add details and textures. Use white charcoal or chalk to add more highlights.
– Fill in the background with dark charcoal. Blend and smooth. Add some white charcoal or chalk for interest.
