It appears that there are more changes coming to Celebrity Cruises. A few weeks ago, I reported on major dining room changes on the Equinox and other ships (check out the linked videos above if you haven’t seen them). Since then, I had the opportunity to cruise on the Celebrity Summit. Today, I will show you what I ate and provide insights into what you can expect from the main dining room if you’re sailing with Celebrity soon. But before we delve into that, let me share other changes that Celebrity is implementing, which you may not be aware of, so stay tuned.

There should be smoking/vaping sections. They would be using drugs and it would annoy many parents/guests I'd think
And that prime rib didn't look too appetizing 😅
I have 2 cruises for 2024 booked with Celebrity after experiencing the cuts they made to RC. They are nickel and diming me out of interest before I even sail with them. I come from a business background. I know the kind of backwards, bottom line chasing manager that their CEO/COO must be without even having met him. I can tell that their chief operating officer doesn't understand top line thinking, and instead is the type of future FORMER officer who will eventually be blamed for putting too much emphasis on chasing the bottom line without building the top line. The top line is sales. If you build THOSE, the bottom line mostly manages itself. People who chase the bottom line, initiate a spiraling effect that cycles their business right out of business. In essence, they might temporarily squeeze more for less out of those walking thru the door, so to speak, but they will have fewer and fewer walking thru that door overall, as people search for a better value. All I have to say beyond this is that Oceania greatly thanks Celebrity for my future business.
O.K lets break this down, I have been cruising since 1990 longer then most EXECUTIVES that are working with the Royal Caribbean Corp (Celebrity and the other holdings) Let me point this out, make no mistake about it, every change that all these cruise lines are doing is to make more money…that is FACT, don't listen to what the cruise line is saying look at what they are doing.
1- Celebrity has raised its gratuity charge 2 times in 9 months and I am POSITIVE every penny is not going to the crew.
2- When you eliminate Butler service and name it Retreat team, It means Cabin (Suite) stewards, that is a money maker.
3-On my sailing on the Reflection in Sept they have a Lobster piece (when your fork prongs are almost as long as the lobster then its a piece) in Blu and the MDR, though Lobster was never really good on cruise ships.
4- $2 off the amount you can get in the Classic drink Package or the cost of a drink in the classic package is raised $2…either way its the same thing, you can now pay $2 for a drink that use to be inclused PLUS gratuities is a HUGE money maker.
5-Filet Mignon is eliminated in the MDR but is available in Blu…Money Maker.
6- I will be sailing in a Aqua Class cabin and on the final chic night there is a Lobster Piece and Rack of Lamb (Probably 3 lamb chops)
Analysis :
Celebrity knows what they can get away with raising and what they can't with pushback. Examples:
Raising Gratuities: Many people wont even see this because many just pay for the all inclusive package…The people who don't buy a all inclusive package and pay for the gratuities seperatly well, they must know they won't be looked at in a kind manner because how could you possible argue against giving the crew a good gratuity, so they are quiet…Celebrity knows this and that is why they out of the blue stated effective immediately fees for gratuities are increased…
Now lets look at changes to a Menu…Celebrity MUST do it on a trial basis because THAT is what 99% of cruisers are very sensitive about, their cuisine. If Celebrity gets slight push back the changes go to even more ships or eventually fleet wide…if they get a bit more then slight pushback, they have their eye on it still keeping the experiment in place…If the push back is severe the menu changes are scrapped..
What else can they down grade or eliminate without much pushback…
1- the Welcome aboard drink as you step on board, many people will say what happened to the welcome aboard drink then just go their way.
2- They can downgrade the Entertainment in the showroom
3- Canapes have just been eliminated from Aqua Class.
4- price increase to Excursions which actually just happened a couple of months ago.
5- cut the hours of the Mass Grill
6- increase the price of photos
7-increase the room service fee another $1
I can go on and on and on…So many things a cruise line can do without much pushback and do not think they are not rolling these ideas around…
WHAT I see as a out for the cruise lines getting away with all this…The new cruiser…That is the GOLDEN TICKET…Most if not all new cruisers have no clue how cruising use to be and all the things that have since be eliminated, so they are getting new cruiser without the knowledge of how it was and just accepting all these changes because they know no better. Then once they get their new younger cruiser base, they can make even more cuts and charge for things that would make seasoned cruisers never cruise again…..
YOUR THOUGHT TOM SUNDAY or anyone else…..
And just like Disney with a lack of people coming through their doors because they are cutting costs and raising prices ( among other things) the cruise industry is doing the same thing. Do they not see how this will turn out? SMH
I have already purchased a classic drink package for my cruise. How can they change conditions after purchase?
I'd prefer there was no vaping or smoking anywhere on the ship. After all, it's proven that second hand smoke is detrimental to anyone's health. Of course, I don't care about a few places outside, because those are avoidable. But inside, like the casino, you can't avoid smoke if you want to be in there. The butler team concept might work, or even be better. We'll have to see. Guessing does no good at all. On the prime rib. I'm okay with a smaller portion as you can order another entree, even a 2nd slice. (unless that has also changed)
Not happy with the vaping concept, hopefully that doesn't pan out. Sailing on the Equinox in September.
Cruise Lines will continue to nickel and dime the heck out of everyone, as long as people continue to allow them to! Stop paying for all these stupid add ons and especially the drink packages!! Our last cruise we did not buy any packages, and actually made out better !
We sailed on equinox at the end of June and they had just begun testing the new menus. We’ve sailed with celebrity countless times and have had both good and bad MDR experiences. On the summit last year we had horrible food in the MDR but the menu was decent. But on equinox in June the menu was awful. Multiple pasta dishes a night and on back to back nights. Our amazing waiter was working so hard to try and keep us happy. He was having to add chicken to things and bring multiple dishes to make up for how bad the options were. They reiterated to us that it was a test menu and to let celebrity know how we felt. We all better hope celebrity gets the memo from feedback because that’s the single worst cruise dining room experiences I’ve ever had purely cause of the menus. The lack of options was actually concerning. And I don’t think we could continue to sail with celebrity if those menus went fleet wide.
We saw a serious downgrade in food quality and availability on our recent Celebrity Beyond. OMG… NO VAPPING! Who the hell thought that was a good idea? LOL
NO VAPING
The portion is small, but delicious.
If there no smoking, there should be no vaping, As a non-smoker I find the weird smells of vapes far more irritating than tobacco.
I am going to guess that some study or at least theory may have suggested that smokers/vapors may be more likely to be more likely to gamble or spend more at the casino. Addictive characteristics may be at the root.
when did they change the drink package ? Lower from 12 to 10? I was undee the impression from research my friends have done that the drinks in the classic pkg up to 10 were included in the pkg. They are plaing a trip later this year.
I think the cruise companies should should get rid of the “packages” and move back to mostly all inclusive, I.e. current base fare + lowest package price as cheapest option. Yes , will be more expensive for some but everyone will get more thereby reducing the “nickel & dime -ing” complaints.
The butler change is definitely a downgrade, regardless of what those who say they don't care because they don't use the butler say. Also, Celebrity food quality and variety in MDRs and the buffet has significantly gone down-hill. It seems like they are charging premium-luxury prices while only delivering mainstream experiences. And you shouldn't be apologetic about complaining. Celebrity is marketing itself as something it no longer is. You are doing a service by warning all the potential cruisers that the videos they watch about Celebrity 1 year ago is not today's Celebrity. This is especially true when it comes to the food, which, from what I can figure, is a high priority for cruisers. Hopefully, Celebrity will restore some quality and add more variety to its food offerings. Because, as it stands, except for the pay-for specialty dining, Celebrity no longer deserves the praise it use to get for its food, imho.
None of these changes sound positive from the guest's point of view, except maybe the vapors. I smoke, but I respect those that don't and keep it to the designated areas. Personally, I don't like a stinky casino and I get it.
On my Reflection cruise I booked the Zero Proof drink package because I don't drink a lot and I also booked the Wi-Fi which was perfect for me. Sounds like that won't be the case now.
It’s such a shame they allow smoking or vaping in the casinos.I personally hate even walking through the casino they spend millions of dollars on these beautiful ships only to have the casino to smell with stagnant cigarettes.I for one do not wish to expose my lungs or clothes to this
