Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between empiricism and epistemological internalism. The two positions are logically independent. Nonetheless, I argue that the only reasonable motivation for empiricism is internalism. An epistemological externalist has no good reason to be an empiricist. (Note: this does not mean that an externalist should be a rationalist. The empiricism versus rationalism debate should be of interest only to internalists.) I look at some of the consequences for philosophy of science.
