TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL & HOMILY

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

A proclamation of the holy gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, o Lord.

At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed to me by my father. No one knows the son except the father, and no one knows the father except the son and anyone to whom the son wishes to reveal him. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus tells us in the gospel today that if we have burdens all we need do is put them on him. Who doesn’t have burdens? Then and only then will we be able to find rest for ourselves. Most of the people that I know would probably claim to be poor. Actually for most of us not knowing what real poverty is, most people would find themselves to be much better off if they truly had to experience the poverty of the world. Yet, most would still say I’m poor. It’s amazing how that happens. But for the most part we spend so much of our time protecting as it were the little things that we do have. And that we don’t have time to just “be” for one another. To be kind. And to appreciate one another. In Jesus we can leave everything behind. Especially the pretenses that we constantly put up. And all we have to do is just be real for a change. I’m not asking anyone to be foolish and to forget about the things that matter or to forget about responsibilities. But we must look at what really, really matters. I hope that we can begin to see that what really matters is peace and tranquility in our world. And that peace and tranquility for all let’s leave it all in Jesus’ hands. And find that rest that he promises when we realize that laying down those burdens from one week to the next really helps, then we can understand that if we do it especially as a community we will have peace in our own homes, our cities, and our world. Amen.
