The success of the Pokémon series is exactly why this genre will never reach anywhere near the following that FPS or Battle Royale games have. It’s honestly just annoying bc I’ve been playing Megami Tensei since before Pokémon was even a thing.
1. We don't call fps game a clone of ID software's doom , quake , wolfstein ,or rage .
2. We don't call all platformer mario clone . Then why people stupidly call monster tamer rpg pokemon clone ? When in reality pokemon is an smt/dragon quest clone
Me: " Oh boy, I hope Cassete beast is really as much of a pokemon clone as everyone says"
Gym Leader Ed screaming in my left ear:"IT! IS! NOT! A! PO! KE! MON! CLONE!!!!!"
Me, now beeing deaf on one side: "Ohhh. ok…."
Puts the game back on the shelf.
Walks away sad and partialy deaf.
(This is a joke in case anyone was wondering)
ah, game journalists. fucking idiots, all of them.
Honestly, people who call cassette beasts a pokemon clone make me so genuinely frustrated it's not even funny. And i don't even get that feeling often.
The "comparing" thing in general is pretty annoying to me. I understand that it might be an easier way to describe one game by using another game as example and i'm fine with that. But holy shit, is it really THAT hard to NOT call it a straight up "clone"???
And i'm not even talking about those who actually do that as an insult. The comment would contain way more agressive language otherwise.
Gym Leader Ed, I’m letting you know. Your fight is meaningless. Why? Not because I think your stupid. No. Quite the opposite. I think gaming journalists and Pokémon fans are stupid. Journalists publish the narrative, Pokémon fans push the narrative, and then the narrative never ends. It doesn’t matter HOW DIFFERENT cassette beast are, it’ll still be trashed and called a “Pokémon clone”. It’ll be compared to scarlet and violet and funny enough, it looks BETTER than scarlet and violet. Ya know….the game where you FALL THROUGH THE MAP AT 5 FPS
game journalists try not to describe every game like a mix of [GAME] and [GAME] with a teaspoon of [GAME] and a dash of [GAME] then bake for [GAME] minutes challenge (impossible)
At this point, I am 99% certain games journos would call Dragon Quest V and Ultraseven Pokémon clones.
So here's how I break things down in the Monster Tamer Genre:
-Poke-Likes: games that emulate the usual pokemon setup (a prof. Character, starter line up, a capture device to toss, similar battle screen layout, ect). Ex: Nexomon, Coromon, Temtem
-Turn based: games that don't emulate pokemon, but still have a turn based RPG quality. Ex: Fossil Fighters, Jewel Summoner, Monster Hunter Stories
-Other: Games that don't emulate pokemon, aren't turnbased rpgs, have a variety of gameplay styles but still have a core focus on monster taming. Ex: Spectrobes, Palworld, Sky Climbers, Ark.
Morning
I’m surprised it’s going onto game pass
Nah, man.
I don’t think it is worth it to "call out" those people. They are most likely calling any monster catching game ”clone” because they don’t even aware of the genre or maybe thinking it’s okay to call it that, just like people calling some games "soulslike” or "monsterhunterlike" etc.
And I really can’t see how this could damage the genre, because people who understand the difference are those who really interested in genre therefore only those people are matters, not those who thinks what everything is a clone of some popular thing suddenly, because there is that one popular thing exist.
And also when it comes to "on the nose” pokemon-inspired games, I don’t think it is even wrong to call them ”pokemon-like" or ”pokemon-inspired” games, although calling them ”clones" is just too harsh imo.
the only downside is so many more people know pokemon more than older games that had systems of creature collection so when you mention stuff like dragon quest or any of the ones in this video that were before pokemon most people probably won't know any of them especially if they are around as an example my age being born in 1998 so when pokemon was already out as a japan only monster game then turned into a western game later still before I was born I'm pretty sure XD so most people just don't know any other games or game series like pokemon so they go Oh that's a pokemon clone though I will say in temtems case it was a blatent steal and the devs kind of publicly announced but also not obviously stated that they took a lot of system ideas from pokemon and cloned them into their own game just made it for pc where no official pokemon game has ever been on pc so cashing in on the whole pokemon sells stigma but the biggest issue I have with temtem is the pricing started off in AUD like $30 which was reasonable for an "early access" excuse but they publicly announced that every major update they would increase the price so now it's like $60 for a game that no offense really should not be more than $35 at most
Gaming journalist written a braindead article ? No way, get outta here.
This is why I prefer to use the term “love letter”. Cassette Beasts (which I’m excited for) is a love letter to Pokémon in a way because it draws inspiration from it and the monster taming genre as a whole. This feels more positive to say than “clone” or “knock off”, which imply bad intentions. If you like my term, feel free to spread the word!
I guess every game is a clone of another game.
Ed I get pissed off as well when a Media outlet refers a Monster Taming Game as a pOkEmOn cLoNe. Game Journalists are dumb and stupid who doesn't do any research.
I was playing a new Tetris clone called "Friday Night Funkin". It was really good, but I wish it was more original rather than just ripping off Tetris. 🙄
You should give up this crusade already Ed. People aren't going to change. If a game has anything remotely resembling capturing and fighting with creatures of some kind someone, somewhere is going to call it a Pokemon clone.
It's like how all tissues are "Kleenex" or bandages are "band-aids". Pokemon is a household name for better or worse.
i can't finish this video, not because of you ed (i love ur vids bro) but because game journalists make me so mad, all they do is spread false information. i liked the vid tho to show support 😃 EDIT: i actually made it through the vid.
Pokemon?… oooh. You mean that Shin Megami Tensei clone. Yeah, I’ve heard of it.
the hard work will pay off
Cap
Adding Pokemon to the title increases the chances of clicks. Thats all it comes down to.
Plus calling it a clone starts arguments which again drives attention to the article.
Pokemon doesnt even deserve all the dick sucking these casuals give it
It isnt news based. Most of these sites just collect hate clicks with false narratives. Journalism costs effort, which these "news sites" are not willing to invest. (And not interested either, it takes away the hateclicks)
I am always happy when more monster games come out. I liked playing them before there was too many. Now I have so many on my list I will have some for years.
These lazy media outlets will see any monster taming game and immediate slap a "pokemon clone" label onto it to get eyes on their usually irrelevant outlet.
4:25 pokemon mystery dungeon and quite a few anime episodes have them turn into pokemon. especially the famous one of ash into pikachu
