  1. This is going to be a fun ride. I hadn't seen Casino Royal since it came out at the movies. I just remember not enjoying it then but I was a teenager and wanted the typical Bond thing but on a rewatch it holds up!

  2. LeChiffre doesn't use an inhaler for asthma; it's a benzedrine inhaler. Benzedrine is an amphetamine that was widely available OTC and (ab)used recreationally until it was made a prescription drug in 1959. Taken from the novel, LeChiffre is a benzedrine addict and his public use of the substance is meant to give the character a slimy feel as by the 1950s, when the novel was written and originally set, public use of benzedrine was akin to chewing tobacco today, namely seen as crude and disgusting.

  3. Please react to the rest of the Bond series, not just the Daniel Craig ones. The classic movies are super fun time capsules in themselves and worth a watch. This one and Skyfall (2012) are on the same level as the best of them. Love your reactions!

  4. Great reaction Coby! You are right that this is an origin story. Casino Royale was the first James Bond book, but not the first James Bond movie, so the Daniel Craig reboot took advantage of that. Just a tip; if you watch Quantum of Solace remember that it starts immediately after where this film ends. Think of it as Casino Royale Part 2 and it makes much more sense 😉

  5. I don't know how much the plot lines follow each other, but the original "Casino Royale" featured Peter Sellers as James Bond. I suspect it was more of a comedy and not officially part of the 007 franchise, but I can't say for sure. Someone please let me know!

  6. Three fan favourites were (mostly) missing from this film. The first was the gun barrel sequence, which had always opened the beginning of each of the previous 20 Bond films (leading into the action packed pre-title sequence.) The second was the almost lack of the James Bond theme being used, and the third was the omission of the iconic “Bond, James Bond” line, which is usually peppered throughout each film.

The gun barrel sequence was omitted because at the start of the film Bond isn’t fully “Bond” as he doesn’t yet have his 00 licence to kill status given to him until he has killed two people. Likewise, the James Bond theme is mostly missing throughout the film because again, Bond still isn’t Bond. Yes, he’s a 00 agent now but he’s still slowly developing into the Bond persona we will come to know and love, and he’s missing the Bond refinements (the dinner jacket sequence is a case in point here where Bond feels completely out of his depth and needs Vesper’s eye for detail to guide him.)

It’s not until the last scene in the film, after Vesper’s death has hardened him into the ruthless secret agent who trusts no one, that the second and third favourites come to the fore. We hear the ominous low notes of the Bond theme as Bond climbs the steps to face Mr. White, before uttering the iconic line, “Bond, James Bond” as the full force of the James Bond theme kicks in and we know now for certain that Bond is now the fully formed Bond we expect him to be.

  7. If you remember the Cold War, Vesper Lynd was always going to have divided loyalties… Ian Fleming named her in a really cheeky way:

Vesper Lynd… sounds like West Berlin (a divided nation during the Cold War when the book was written)

  8. This is a remake of the first Bond story, a beginning in modern era. Here James Bond gets his double ohs. That's why you've heard it's a good place to start. Not a continuation of Bond ended with Brosnan, but a rewrite and a reboot.

  9. The Bond Series with Daniel Craig IS from the beginning introducing characters from the Bond movies. Casino Royal in the 60's was the "first" Bond, but it was silly and not really "Bond". All pre-Craig Bond movies were stand alones so you have to watch each Daniel Craig movie in order because they build to a climax. Enjoy

  10. This reboot of James Bond was much needed and, imo, is the best. Influenced by the Bourne Trilogy, they recast the role with Daniel Craig and remade Casino Royal. I highly recommend you watch the rest of the Daniel Craig series.

  11. double Os don't deal with the small threats. they get involved in the big stuff, and the big stuff is usually being perpetuated by an uber rich guy or group of guys. gambling is the most popular past-time of the uber rich, so double Os, by necessity, need to be good gamblers.

  12. One of the hallmarks of a James Bond film is they often feature the current trends of the time in which they are made. When this film was made, The Bodies presentation Bond finds himself in when he goes to Miami was a popular travelling exhibit. Texas Hold'em poker was all the rage at the time, so they featured that throughout the story. In Ian Fleming's book, they played Baccarat.

  13. I would say that was the second person he ever killed… As a MI6 agent. It's hinted at later as him having a background in the SAS. Which makes sense to recruit from former SAS as they do receive spy training from the MI6.

  14. There was an episode of The West Wing when the President (Martin Sheen) is having a conversation with some of his staff and he starts talking about martinis. He says they should always be stirred, never shaken. If you shake a martini with ice, the ice chips and melts faster which dilutes the drink. "Bond was ordering a weak-ass drink and being snooty about it."

  15. The scene when Bond swerves to miss Vesper tied up on the road was actually shot irl, not a CG car. They had it tricked out so it would flip. It holds the record for the amount of times a car was flipped: Seven.

  16. There were more or less stand-alone Bond movies from Sean Connery up to Pierce Brosnan until Daniel Craig took up the mantle of James Bond. I personally would like to see the franchise go back to this former format.
