To understand the US point of view, remember this quote, as it applies universally to great powers: "We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. In other words, great powers will humour you and pat you on the head until they need to steal from you, and then will throw you under the bus. The global world is splitting and the US is losing cheap access to Global South resources. They WILL seek alternatives and North of the border is where it's at. The US armed forces are maybe 10 times bigger than Canada's, but in international law and precedent, if you're not prepared to defend it from the get-go, it doesn't belong to you in the first place. Time for Canada to downgrade its side-kick status, stop participating in overseas US military and Naval challenges to other countries claims and sovereignty, and undertake a credible defence of Canada's territory.

Trumps legacy will be the removal of the US from world affairs. The world will shift to China as a world leader.
The US threats of invasion and other nations following that lead, suggest that all other nations need to create a world force under a UN mandate that protects boarders and freedom of navigation. Given the new military spending and the climate change imperative. A world military makes sense to reduce military spending, military contributions to climate change and free up money to transition to a non fossil fuel economy. A side benefit is a world military no longer requires nuclear weapons. China and Russia will agree before the US, but the US fiscal reality may force it to comply.
