  2. Damn, I remember playing Halo PC on a circa 2005 Compaq laptop with a 4:3 screen ratio and having a better experience than on the G4. The only thing that was lacking during play was any bump-mapping.

    It wasn't even an expense laptop, it was mid-range.

Actually most CRTs had more than 60 Hz and some went easily to 120 Hz at certain resolutions, it was all depending on the beam getting a whole image which at lower resolutions can go over the whole surface 120 times a second. LCDs on the other hand need a high resolution because that will be native and maximum at the same time so they're usually as high as possible but for high refresh rates it needs a higher pixel clock. So LCDs introduced a tradeoff between native resolution and refresh rate where CRTs could run lower resolution at higher refresh rates and vice versa.
