Camellia Time! – Griffin Steals the Show – In this video we show off a few Camellias in bloom in the home garden. The open flowers have been damaged by cold nights, but they will have more flowers coming soon.

  1. Oh, I love this video! The joy is infectious! ✨ Yay for Jim’s giggling / laughing at Griffin’s antics. Also, I love camellias but have yet to add one to my garden. Thanks for the helpful info β€” gets me one step closer to starting my own collection.

  2. My poor Alabama Beauty Camellia is trying to recover from the artic blast of December 2022. That plant and my Marvel Mahonia lost every leaf they had. The mahonia took a while, but it's looking pretty good. The Camellia has regained about half of its leaves. No flowers this year. My Oakland Holly lost all of its leaves too, which really, really surprised me. It looks like it's totally recovered now. Arctic blast in December and then no rain from Aug until now.

  3. I fell in love with camellias on a tour through Magnolia Planation ~30 years ago. I found one at a local garden center, hardy to my z6b, many years ago. Twice in all these years, I have all but lost it to winter cold; luckily it has come back from the roots or resprouted very low on the trunk as it did this year after the Polar Vortex of Dec 2022, thanks to the leaves I piled around it. When Mother Nature cooperates, it produces the most gorgeous pink semi-double blooms. Through the years, however, more buds have been frozen (27 froze one year) than have actually blessed me with their stunning beauty. But I wouldn’t remove it for any reason! I just cross my fingers and hope that next year will be a banner year.

  4. My Camelias have never bloomed and I don’t know why. I have fed them with Canelia fertilizer. They bud up, but don’t bloom. Any ideas as to why I have this problem? My neighbors also have Camelias that no longer bloom. We do have naturally alkaline soil here, so I know this is part of the issue. I have one that gets more sun and the leaves burn. The other one has healthy leaves, but no blooms. We are in zone 8A, Plano, Texas.

  5. Jim,
Camillas bloom when temperatures can be pretty chilly, often when the bees have gone dormant. What pollinates them?
Also, while we're talking bees, can you put together a video on your bee setup & their needs throughout the different seasons?
    Thank you. 😊

  6. Jim,
I got 2 Japonica’s called β€œKramer” zone 8A/B put them in a pot on the north side of the house to see how they do this first season and then I will plant them and get them tree formed. So excited!
I am also trying the Pink Shi Shi (Sasanqua) in the East Garden closer to the house also in a pot to see how it does (has not bloomed but budded up for sure). Waiting until Spring to plant all in ground.
BTW – Griffin is a beautiful soul (carefree) … thanks for sharing the family with us.

  7. Oh my goodness Griffin is too cute! Great video. I'm in southern Calif. zone 10b and we have 4 large very old Camellia bushes. I think they're all Japonicas BUT, one is in bloom right now. It has just started flowering but it's loaded w/ buds and stands a majestic 6ft tall. Our temps were mild this summer/fall so maybe that's why it started blooming. Our soil is acidic (5.5) and we don't fertilize them, although I may give them some regular fertilizer this year: thanks for the tip!

  8. I live in southern Missouri (6b-7a) I grew camellias years ago I lived in a house on old farm land and the camellias was right up next to the house . I could grow just about anything on this land because of that awesome soil . I was never able to grow them anywhere else I lived .

  9. Such great advice – thank you! Would love to hear your advice about factoring in deciduous tree shade cover when choosing a spot for camellias. I have a south facing garden that gets 6-8 hrs of sun in winter but 2-3 hrs in summer thanks to some beautiful oaks, and I would love to fill it with camellias if they could handle those conditions well.

  10. I would love to hear from those who have successfully grown camellias in Zone 6b (recently upgraded to 7a). Where do you site your camellias? I have Winter's Snowman in a shady, protected site. On the plus side, it survived last winter, but it isn't blooming. I should never have gone to Kew Gardens in March — huge camellia japonica blooming away!

  11. Hi Jim, I have a camellia that has gall. A very old, probably 15 ft plus tree. Decided not to do anything because of age and size(same for me). It flowers beautifully. I do try to remove any deformities that I can reach. I also see the same thing on the old azaleas growing under it. All are under a number of huge pines. Nc, sandy soil. Suggestions? jd

  12. You said that if your soil is between 4,5-6,5pH, you dont need acidic firtalizer. Why? And when is the right time to use acidic firtalizer then? Do you need it at all?
changed my career at the age of 40. (Partly because of your channel 😊) Went to school and became a gartner. Work at a gardencenter and I sell acidic firtalizers to people 😳 Am I fooling myself and others??
