  1. There's a special kind of person who buys a 'new to the UK' car – from Yugos through Peroduas through to post-Rover MGs and now the variety of CHeslas we're being deluged with…

I think the word is 'MUG' (the missing letter in every MG tbh) but the nicer word is "guinea pig" – either way you're going to have a rough time in that lab…

I worked on a lot of the new-to-the-UK MGs – the main dealer used us for troubleshooting and they were absolute dogshit – we're now seeing some of the newer cars and – erm – not much has changed tbh, we're still talking the cheapest plastics, the nastiest switches and wire made of fairy-hair…

You can also talk to people who owned Cheverolets (Daewoos) or Ssangyongs earlier outpourings – it's lovely when you literally cannot get any servce/diagnostics or parts for your 'now completely worthless' car isn't it?

You have to be MAD to throw your money at this stuff – I know you REALLY want an electric car and can't afford a better one but "buy cheap – buy twice" and all that jazz

You'd have to pay me to drive one – let along own one and if it has "Build Your Dreams" on the back it'll be double the cost…

  2. As for more colorful cars, I am all for that. But go to the dealer and what do they have? Black, gray, and white! Maybe gray is a bit silvery. Need to buy today and the one that looks least sad is…. Black!

  3. 5:25 I heard a lot about Chinese EVs going up in flames, while at the same time locking up the doors and windows, basically making it impossible to get out of it when it's on fire. That's probably why there's a tool for breaking open the windows.

  4. Don't buy this Chinese gov't subsidized junk. They don't play fair in business nor social affairs. I'm OK with electrical cars and always will watch this channel for car reviews

  5. I like the idea of them and one would probably work for me but I'm abit short of the 30 odd k to buy one and when paid for it would be worthless with a big worry as to where would you get parts for a car like this at 6+ years old. The Chinese seem to be knocking out different models quite regularly and your shiny new car would be like windows 98 quite quickly with no guarantee of anyone being able to work on it. The possibility of computer says No when a problem comes up would turn it into an ornament 😭
Maybe I'm a doubting Thomas but my 12 year old kia and 27 year old cinquecento are still going like the clappers and I can tinker with them myself 😊👍🇮🇪

  6. 1500kg would be a decent weight for a C-segment car, only 200-250kg more than a ICE. However having seen these about (there is a fetching mauve colour available!), they are sized more like a B-segment car. So 1500kg is pretty heavy for a B-segment car. But I guess the advantage is a bigger range, compared to something like a Mini Cooper electric which only weighs 100kg more than the ICE version (but has a very small range). I'd like to see BEVs get as close to weight parity as possible IMO, less weight makes everything better! (Supposedly the Mini Cooper SE is a hoot to drive and nearly as fun as the regular ICE Mini Cooper S, thanks to the weight being close.)

  7. I drove the big battery version a few months ago. It was okay but somehow felt more like an appliance than a car. The MG 4's probably more engaging and fun. Overall I'm not an EV fan but a plug in hybrid like the Cupra Leon PHEV, I'd probably be happy with.

  8. BYD UK sales are back on then ?. They had been suspended in 2023 due to all the battery fires. I think the figure was they had more fires than any other car manufacturer worldwide for 2023.

  9. Ive driven various EVs for over 10years but still living out my classic car enthusiasm through your channel. Enjoy the variety. Enjoyed this as much as seeing you battle a rusty rover in the rain! 😂

  10. They include a window breaker because of the amount of BYDs catching fire in China and trapping their occupants inside 😮. Just Google BYD in China at how many people have been seriously hurt because of these god awful EV things.

  11. That's why I love this channel: every time something completely different. And yes, not a huge fan of EV's. But they are here, so we have to get used to them. Great honest review Matt!

  12. A deposit of £269 and the same monthly payment with 8000 miles per year is a very cheap way to run a car; a similar size petrol vehicle like a polo will have an upfront payment of c.£3000 and even at 50 mpg will cost another £90 a month for fuel so this little EV shows another £50 a month saving there also when charging on the domestic electricity tarif. Not for me but the whole life cost (49 months) of this car is starting to look very attractive for many motorists if they do a proper costing model which is why we the Govt. will soon follow the EU and impose high import taxes on state subsidised EV's from China.

  13. I have a 2018 Yaris which has just the right amount of [unobtrusive] tech for me.Can't stand those screens even though I like the simplicity of an electric motor and the instant torque.A Nissan Leaf might be a better bet in that regard..or an IONIC.

  14. Some nice touches inside and out but overall…its no looker, is it?
Shame you had to do your housekeeping spiel at the beginning, but hey, that's social media for you.
Totally agree with you on the screen as well. All functions that are likely to be accessed whilst driving should have physical buttons for them.

  15. Interesting review, the dreaded big screen and few buttons issue is horrible on seemingly every new car now, as is the thing telling me how to drive. At one point I was seriously considering an EV as my next car, a lot more information now about the ownership experience, insurance, battery etc that has put me off.

  17. Matt this is a good factual, unbiased, informative review. Anyone who would unsubscribe from your channel because of it needs their head examining.
If the European car industry wants to beat the Chinese they need to make better cars at an affordable cost. I'm sure we have the knowledge, expertise, technology and innovative skills to do that.

  18. Serious question, not facetious, to all that do it: Why do you adjust the climate control so "often"?

Isnt the point of it, conversly to manual control, that you can set it to a temperature and the rest is automatic?

Seems to be a bugbear for many in the US and UK, but I have never seen anyone that touches it where I am at, and I dont do it myself either.

Is it a generational issue where people are used to normal control and cant help themselves? Sort of like a lot of "older" people are scared of cruise control (at least where I am at), because they arent used to it? Again, not criticising anyone, just curious.

Myself, I got it at 21C for my cars, and it works perfectly. I never touch it really.

  20. A lot of EV hate is a consequence of our esteemed and competent government (of whatever colour) forcing the issue with their damaging Net Zero programs. They will inevitable massively increase the cost of motoring, particularly hitting the rural poor. It's sad really, because EVs of various sorts are clearly the future of urban and suburban transit

  21. when things like temp controls are permanently on a screen at the bottom I found its fine, its similar to a fixed button. If you dont like it then more likely your not used to touch screens. Physical buttons are great but replacing them makes sense as you can change them in s/w

  22. I am really considering the Dolphin, but the colors are horrid where I live: Cream white (yuck), Urban gray, White with a gray top, blue with a gray top, and "atlantis gray" with a black top. The least ugly would be the blue and gray but still. If they even had just blue all over I'd be fine with it.
