Hitler famously asked Ribbentrop “Now what?” when Britain declared war on Germany in 1939 after Germany invaded Poland. This has sparked a debate, with one of my viewers asking why Hitler was shocked that Britain declared war if he understood Britain’s ‘European Balance of Power’ strategy? Today we answer that question.

Have you read John Lukacs "The Hitler Of History"?
Please can you tell me in which video (or the quote) you said that Marx said that he was explicitly against the free nature of capitalism as an economy? You quoted Marx and he said that the economy should go against nature and be forced on by the people to make it run and distribute (he said it in flowery writing though). Sorry for the aside.
Back in High school in the 1980s in Montreal, the whole economic predicament of Germany in the 1930s was actually taught per our history teacher so the choice of the nazi state to be in a permanent and unsustainable deficit that only a war of colonization would alleviate together with the buildup of the military peaking by 1940 in comparison to other nearby countries also quickly rearming meant that WW2 was started for economic reasons and the very nature of Hitler's economic choices made that inevitable. This is definitely unlike what seems to be described as the mainstream instruction where crazy madman Hitler started the war to kill the Jews and others undesirable and for mostly ideological reasons… after magically resolving all of Germany's economic woes which is supposedly the only good thing the nazis did then. The difference for me seems to be that my history teacher was also teaching economics and geography so that insight let him have a far better and more accurate picture.
Britain backed off TWICE before declaring war when Poland was invaded. The first time was when Germany occupied the DMZ on it's border with France. The 2nd time was the Munich "negotiation."
The guy who does these videos, "TIK" seems pretty sold on the liberal "free-market" capitalist model of how the world should be run. But others, like Hitler and Castro and ME, are not sold on that idea. We prefer the SOCIALIST model, where the first priority—-come what may—-is to take care of CITIZENS, period. This is the policy, for instance, that Hugo Chavez of Venezuela followed. The result was that his followers hailed him as the "Robin Hood of South America", while his more conservative critics said he "ruined" the Venezuelan economy. But how can you "ruin" an economy that is only serving the rich, which is what capitalism typically does? If "ruining" an economy is the only way to insure equality, then go ahead and ruin it! I think this was the attitude of both Chavez and Hitler. Human beings were not put here to keep businesses running! I have been saying for decades now that NO ONE, regardless of academic credentials, can ever hope to understand either Hitler or World War Two without first resolving the whole capitalism/socialism issue.
have you covered why the allies didn't declare war on Russia when they invaded poland with Germany?
Spot on , you just to add the fact the Germany wasn’t quite “ a full on smart capitalism economy “.. their scope an scale an massive inefficient plants “ made even the cottages industry seemed confused, let alone the Americans “ an even the Marxist in Russia with their “ advanced technology of American designed plants – & factories..Again as alway brilliant job. Cheers,Allan

Please sir you know exactly clearly I love your content, please. Sir focus concentrate sharp on Stalingrad Then Kursk???????l want from you to answering me in reply&complete your present&future series????????????????????????
Time stamp 4:14, "Hitler wanted to do what was right for the German people"? Really?? Despite the fact that any political opposition, real or perceived, (Looking at you Night of the Long Knives), resulted in extreme violence. Despite the fact that all German Jews either escaped Germany or went into Ghettos where they were starved. Then labour camps where they were worked to death and concentration camps where they were stripped of all possessions and dignity before being murdered. Don't forget this happened to members of the Communist Party, and such people as earned the ire of the Nazi machine. Hitler's noble goal was not for German citizens, just those that were not a threat or obstacle.
Chamberlin's "Peace in our time" was for the masses. He knew Hitler would keep pushing buttons and so he took the piece of paper to gain time for war production and rearmament programs to kick in. The question is, was Hitler and his advisers aware of this or did they really believe the con?
What about theory that Hitler was deliberately misinformed by Ribbentrop that Britain would not declare war?
I agree with your assessment of Poland and Hitler's aims. The comment by David Hoggan seems to completely ignore the fact that Hitler had done a deal with the Soviets and Stalin to carve Poland up between them. Though it is interesting to note that Stalin's invasion of Poland happened once the Germans had pressed the Poles into a precarious position and the USSR's invasion was a cynical move to take advantage of that.
So a question based on the limited discussion about economics in this video. The most immediate benefit of going to war and knocking France out of the war was the cessation of WWI reparations. As you mentioned, the interest alone was a significant bite out of the German economy. Had Hitler put off Barbarossa until Nth Africa had been resolved, then he may have been able to stabilise his economy using foreign resources and redirecting reparations funds into the German economy. Was this impact not noted prior to the invasion of the USSR ?
I like your videos . I studied European history at University. I just think Hitler was consumed with hatred and a nut. I realise he was a skilled politician and a thinker. Either you classify him as a nut ,or eccentric at the least.
There were many members of the British aristocracy who supported Hitler, which included the Duke of Windsor (x-Edward 8th). Even with the deployment of the BEF in France he believed they would step in to force a peace treaty. This is why Hess flew to England, but it was a trap. After Churchill became Prime Minister many of those same aristocrats had "mysterious accidents" and the Duke of Windsor was exhiled to Bermuda.
Your patreon guy, assuming all that about Hitler, lol…Hitler was an idiot, with rigid, extremist, inflexible thinking, a gibbering mess…you know, that type of thinking which makes you jump with absolutizations and generalizations and you can't see the relative part in notions! All these 'socialist' systems were like that! Most times, a rigid retarded thinking is directly corelated with some pretty mean selfish egos, otherwise the bad 'emotional' complexes we witnessed in these individuals won't be expressed! But it's ok, because most people are dumb animals, anyways….So, history will always repeat itself! And your patreon guy would've been a perfect candidate for Hitler's party, brainwashed by him! Damn, people are idiots…they never cease to amaze me! 🤣
Hey Tik now the subject Im going to mention here might not be familiar. But there was some societal research done based out of the Game EVE Online, since the researchers figured that since most of the players dont have the societal backdrop typically put into most scenarios and they had built up a virtual society within this "blank space" of space ships and space ship captains in a video game. But the researchers took note of the "Warlords" of the game, leaders of the largest most territory commanding factions, and in particular they took note of a player known as The Mittani who commanded one of the more powerful Alliances of the game, without ever logging in. And in particular they noted the man's ability to offput people and know semi-to-mostly private information about the players as well as his "madman" status and even conducted interviews and research on that. Some of the Conclusions there was that coming across as a "madman" was actually beneficial, both since then as you were more reasonable in person than your reputation that put others at ease, and you could leverage it as both a tool of intimidation and as a excuse to get away with actions other factions within the game would not normally tolerate and would instead declare war over.
While Hitler also had the factors of real world history weighing on him, and more serious economic and cultural situations going on. Do you think there is evidence to support that perhaps everything about the "madman" Hitler myth has more of a basis in the findings they had when studying The Mittani than in Hitler "just was a crazy guy who believed crazy stuff".
Hitler was Austrian. Nazism increased and he was more popular in Austria in 1955 compared to 1933. Hitler was some kind of organizational psychopath, but I wouldn't call him stupid. Just like Putin sends those who threaten him to Ukraine. Hitler dismissed Fritz Darges on the spot and had him transferred to the Eastern Front.
BlitzKrieg was a British idea, that was ignored by the British military, but obviously adopted by the Nazis. This as we know, means Lightening quick attacks, overwhelming the enemy asap. Included in the armament, was short range twin engine bomber's. As the war in general, expanded into a very wide and long-range protracted campaign. It became clear that the ommission of Heavy four engined Bomber's, for retaliation, and supplying the Front line troops, was a huge mistake. Given the total belief in Blitzkrieg, who was responsible for that error, and why did it take so long, to try and correct that ?
Hitler forgot one basic fact about the UK from the 1600s to the 1900s. 'No single dominant power on the european continent'. Its the cornestone of british foreign policy until 1945. A deal with Germany basically meant accepting a single dominant power. That's the reason why all 'peaceniks' failed. Their ideas went against the basics of centuries of foreign policy.
How does Elon Musk find enough time to deal with such topics? I did NOT know he was so interested in World War II?!
In one of the intercepted calls, a Russian soldier mentioned political officers. Made me think how was the Ministry of Propaganda organized in nazi-Germany. How many men were at the frontline?
Never send a brit to do an Americans job
"But is this really the case?" lol😃
All sides made mistakes in judgement . Germany was able to correctly guess the reaction of many nations leaders early in the war . Britain was not one of them . However , it might have been correct had Chamberlin still been Prime Minister . Churchill and Chamberlin could not have been more different men . He also underestimated Roosevelts ability to hold the alliance together , considering Churchill and Stalin despised each other , but both respected Roosevelt .
@1:35 Autarky never works. For the sake of argument, imagine say, WW3 happened right after WW2 and anybody one happens to fancy, had won, and by the 1960's had consolidated power over all around the globe. Every single nation had fallen or agreed to become a part of one united nations of earth. But eventually, this chaos of WW3 had ultimately created the first stable world government. All under one rule, one government. By my preference, a democratic one. But that is beside the point.. Now fast forward to year 2022. Two weeks ago we discovered aliens, which are hostile, and by yesterday, we'd find ourselves de facto at war against them. Question remains: Are we, the humans living in an autarky?
Don't forget that the German war economy received a major finance boost from the estimated £600 million in gold they stole from various sources never mind the silver and other precious metals , artworks , Other currencies , Ceramics , cultural items , books etc etc . Plus the vehicles looted from France , household furniture and appliances they stole which could have ended up in every home in Germany lessening the need for the production of these items opening up further capacity to produce armaments .
Alot of this sounds eerily similar to the path russia has taken currently even up to their justification
TIK I've really enjoyed watching your videos, this video has so many disruptive adverts that it is almost impossible to follow.
Hitler was a psychopath, embracing not only a political doctrine that eventually toppled a government and a long hidden cultural poison, he was that singular individual… when you mix apathy, hatred, nationalism, and an excuse to be the worst version of humanity…
What do you get? Oh, blame it on someone else?
I imagine some people are asking that question right now?
Anyways, Hitler must have been a simpleton just from the foremost fact, Britain would never allow a first power continental Germany.
Why say economically…Hitler thought economics…but, he was a revolutionary, right up until he became the establishment. It wasn't money, it was ideology.
Why do you assume 20/20 on Germany's production…you always mention caution, don't use forecasting. Just saying.
Quotes in this case should be used sparingly, Hitler may have been deadly earnest, but, he was a propagandist first and foremost. And, a psychopath.
Lastly…. never, ever, never forget, that Hitler was the idol that everything evil stemmed from that moment when he became member 555.
Just saying, all the best.
Cheers.
