Building the Marble Machine in a text document – Better than I thought!

Experienced engineers has told me to write down what the Marble Machine should do, in text (Design requirements) This process has turned out to be way more fun and creative than I first thought. Starting from design requirements creates a solid foundation that I didnโ€™t have on the previous machines

  1. I just watched a video earlier today called "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Plain Text" by a channel called Boiler Plate and it's about taking exactly what you're doing and scaling it up to big projects as quick-and-easy as possible.

  2. Listen to your mom, Martin! She knows you love the music. She knows we love the music. Don't forget the entire reason you're making this marble machine: to bring your music to the people.

  3. Drummer here. I don't think dropping 2 marbles at the same time will provide the sound you think it will. You can get some weird sounds when hitting a drum with 2 sticks at the same time. There will likely be some undesirable effect on the sound as well as the marble bounces.

  4. This is closer to Real Actual Engineering than many might realise. You are basically writing a musical version of what engineers call a "Process Narrative" or "Control Narrative", an important early step in designing factories, chemical processing plants, etc!

  5. The ambitions seem excessively (unrealistically?) complicated. At this point with low investment it's fine, but when all the theoretical design is done, I think it would seem prudent to not go directly into full scale production of the entire machine. Rather a proof of concept should be made at a very small scale. Something like bass drum, snare drum, two notes on the vibraphone, one channel for each, four bar phrase, small marbles. This would also only require a small drive-train. This would not only be a way to test the functionality of an enitre assembly, but also a way to test the manufacturing and assembly processes – and to gain a lot of experience for both these aspects. Probably things like two-marble hit on the hihat should also be tested.

  6. Your mum is so right , you could do a fade at the end of your videos where you play and then the names of your Patreons scroll with your playing as back ground music till the end of that list

  7. I'm really sceptical about that snare drum. I would go for: regular accented hit, ghost note, roll. Really doubting whether having three separate dynamic levels and two different length rolls will have a substantial effect on the music you can write with this thing. Less is more!

  8. I think you should keep in mind that the machine will have to complement and help your band make music or at least that you'll have a whole band with you able to add character and dynamics to your music. What makes music sound human? Humans! I would suggest you keep the machine more simple and have the band jam with it. This way you will achieve great music, mechanical reassurance and better integration of humans and machine as you correctly imo mentioned is the theme of the tour.
