Well, if this game is going by Stardew Valley rules, then the chickens would likely eat grass, just like your cows do.
Also, assuming the game works like Stardew Valley, then all the grass would likely die out come winter; so you might want to consider investing in a silo, so that you could cut the grass and (theoretically) store it as hay.

Shelab letter from museum you had already read and not being able to call cows out are just 2 of the many bugs that have recently been happening in game. I had bug where I did not receive reward from goddess.

When clearing your farm you can make glazed treeseeds for stamina to go longer.
I think the fast travels open after some goals like 'collect 50 bugs' etc
