Is this a terrible idea? Quite possibly. In order to get more out of my live tones, I was thinking, what if I use an HX Effects for all post Amp/Cab effects like Reverb, Delay, Loopers – and my usual HX Stomp for Drives and Amps and Modulation? Seems almost like it might be a good idea?
Hope you’re having a great day with family!

I’ve decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together – https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=CCTNL7P2XSQDC – I will then email you a link to both bundles!

  1. I have a 12”x24” pedalboard that perfectly fits exp pedal, HX FX, HX Stomp, L6 G10s and MIDI baby3 for 4 snapshot selection (stomp and FX) along with 2 button selector for preset up and down. This all powered by Cioks DC7. It was pieced together over time for various reasons, but looks more like a normal pedal board versus helix floor. Plus the wireless makes it epic.

  2. Cioks DC7 does a great job powering a HxStomp & HxEffects. This modular approach is great and love the looper/delay/reverb as permanent end of chain, spillover friendly set up.

Two HxStomps on a Pedaltrain Nano with Cioks DC7 for small & mighty (full Helix power) set up. Or Nano plus board and use one HxStompXL and one HxStomp. This form factor keeps everything on Nano size pedalboard. Very easy to lug that around.

  3. Yep I have been running multiple Helix chains jointed together with command center for a while and there are huge advantages to running this over a helix floor. Using dual loopers is a really great thing to build I do find that Live though, Modular is definitely the way to go, especially in the studio space, it tends to become a bit too much like Lego where you are constantly taking this apart.

    but oddly enough – live

I’d much prefer the actual floor for live use so long as you’re not flying. In the car, Eventually you’ll take up about the same space for a hybrid board, and all bagged up there is usually a negligible space savings. The amount of info you get placed clearly in front of you by the 10 scribbles on the helix floor and the simpler cable management just work for me. ( live ) .

I’d try this idea out including all 3, and see which wins.

  4. I run an HXFX, Stomp and Headrush MX5 in a modular board and there are so many options not really available in any one modeler. The HXFX and Stomp are designed to run together as one unit when done correctly. Tempo, preset changes and snapshot recall are all options you can synchronize with 0 knowledge of MIDI. But since They are also powerful midi controllers they're fairly simple to do the range thing with any modeler capable of receiving these commands.

  5. And for any attempting it MIDI is not your only option to integrate your units in a seamless fashion. Buy yourself a couple of Electro Harmonix dual expression pedals and you can get super crazy with your preset building. I use them to switch instantly between snapshots and simultaneously change scenes (Headrush version of snapshots) as well as adjust mix parameters on all units together which in effect acts as extra snapshots. Plus any unit has assignable expression pedal commands with only the two pedals and no plugging/unplugging.

  6. Just been thinking the same, and either having the stomp in the loop or in series like this, I’ve tested and I can’t seem to find any tonal changes from either being in each others loop or series which is great but then sitting with the options of how to build it made my mine explode for 5 mins haha!

  7. I use the hx effects to control the Hughes and kettner GM40. Each patch I have amp settings save and effects. Via midi then pressing by the store button on the amp the selecting the pactch on the hx effects will store all the amp setting to that patch. There is a gap when switching channels but it’s no different then some modeler’s.

  8. I have both the Stomp and Effects, and the only way I have tried it is with the Stomp just providing the amp model, then going into the Effects for chorus, delay, and reverb. I am able to get all of those on just the Stomp alone, and since I’m currently just a bedroom player, I have just been using the Stomp.

I would like to add that, at least to my ears, the end result when adding the Effects, the end signal isn’t quite as pristine, probably because you are adding an additional analog to digital conversion in the chain. It’s still something I would like to pursue more myself if I ever get back to playing with others again, although I am considering getting the full size Helix or Helix Rack. Or maybe the Neural DSP Quad Cortex? We’ll see.

Would love to see you experiment more with this.

  9. I've got my 2023 board ready. with pedals. real guitar pedals like a Diaz treblebooster and a Prince of Tone and a tape delay. Real manly stuff. Not that the viewers on this channel would know about that, or girls.

  10. I've been doing the opposite of this, lately. Running drives into the Stomp XL on a Pedaltrain Jr. sized board. The Stomp XL is all of my amps, modulation pedals, reverbs, and delays, and the drives are my gain stages.

  11. I did this last year, went in with a lot of optimism. I know have a main board with the HX Effects and a mini board with the HX Stomp. I was using the Effects as the main control, and looped the Stomp into effects loop one. Just ended up being too complicated, and the results not as divine as I'd hoped. Perhaps with what you describe, either looping in the signal from the Effects for reverb and modulation or just running as the next step in the chain for the audio setup, and then control from the Effects (with it's scribble strips and more controls) you might get much better results.

The other issue for me in that set up seemed to be an exponential options paralysis.
