Welcome to our Island! This trip I wanted to focus on getting the foundation set up for the mini cabin before the ground freezes while still harvesting logs for the sauna cabin.
On the first day of the trip I felled two pine trees for our log sauna cabin and set up our new security camera. After dark I took Helena to the train station so she could make it back to Helsinki for class. The first night was also the coldest of the trip and got down to -2 Celsius.
On the second day I got stared on the mini cabin, I knew where we wanted to build it but had to cut down a few spruce trees in order to clear the area and not have to worry about crushing the mini cabin in the future. It ended up working out as the I got two 4 meter logs for the sauna cabin from them as well as a nice base to start building the mini cabin. Once the area was cleared I set up the foundation to the mini cabin. Then it got dark I ended up debarking one 7m log for the sauna cabin from the trees I felled the other day.
For the last day of the trip I got the first layer of the mini cabin set up! After that I spent the rest of the day harvesting the tips of the trees that were to thin to use for the sauna cabin as well as the rest of the spruce I had just felled. Now I have a plethora of logs ready to debark and start using for the mini cabin.
Next trip I am going to be able to start building up the walls for the mini cabin it should go pretty quickly as it is going to be a butt and pass cabin, but well see how far I can get! I also need to finish debarking the trees I felled this trip. The forecast says there should be snow next trip and lower temps so hopefully the tent and me can handle it.
More about us, the island and the process:
The island is completely secluded, has no electricity or plumbing and currently has nothing on it but trees. We want to turn this island into a fully functioning summer cottage with a log cabin, sauna and other amenities. Most of the work is gonna be done in the summer months as the lake freezes in the winter and the weather conditions are tough.
There’s a lot of work to be done as the island is over 2.5 acres (1 hectare) and we have no experience in off-grid living, carpentry or building. So any tips or advice are greatly appreciated, as we are planning on doing everything ourselves and transforming the island into our own little paradise. We’ll document every step of the way, starting from smaller builds to finally – an off-grid log cabin.
Our plan for this year is to put up a platform for a glamping tent, build a floating dock and start cutting down trees to begin the process of building our log cabin.
The island is located in Finland and we bought it in 2024. We are currently both students and we plan to transform the island alongside our studies.
So, subscribe and join us on this adventure. It won’t be fast, it won’t be easy, but it will be fun and challenging. We don’t know what to expect, so be a part of the journey.

that camera must be a joke
Btw you can use an old mining trick where they put a wooden wench into a rock and put water on it so it breaks apart, so in case you have something to hard to get through
Stop what you re doing and do a proper foundation! That s gonna wash away and the structure will go down or downhill. Try digging holes and put the logs there vertically, previously painted with tar or burned …..and then the structure join the ends of the logs at the corners by cutting out notches half the thickness of each wood …..
So you are putting the mini cabin with the best view and the main cabin with a crappy view, defies logic!
That minicabin will weight at least few thousand kilos. Those foundation blocks won't hold it still. Put one in middle of every side AND and in center of cabin. Dig ground, use cement, use screw pillars etc. There will be rocks and probably bedrock, maybe you can bolt your foundation to bedrock.
Do you have permits for what you are building? You are building awfully close to the lake.
"When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a cabin on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest cabin in all of Finland."
Moi! Kiitos videoista, teillä on mahtava meininki! Nuo perustukset eivät valitettavasti ole riittävän stabiilit. Mikään estä niiden sivuttaisliikettä. Lisäksi ne täytyy kaivaa routarajan alapuolelle.
Just like many have said, that foundation is not enough. You should really consult some actual engineer how it would be made the right way.
are you also going to school ? what is your major?
Those foundations weaker than Lidl toilet paper
As a Seaman and fellow owner of an offgrid island in Finland I think you should look in to Screw Piles for an fast and easy but yet stable ground.
Also you could get lots pf help from your followers if you fore example ned something welded, I bet there is someone near by who could help you.
Maby a Facebook group would be helpful for those sort of things easier to link to things and share tips.
Chainsaw tip: Before cutting a trunk that you fell into logs, look towards the both end of the felled tree. If the point where you are sawing from is elevated related to both ends of the trunk that are supported on the ground, you need to cut a little bit maybe 1/4 of the way from the upside and the cut the rest 3/4 from the underside. This can be different if the trunk is supported by a mound/rock near the point where you are cutting from, then you need to do that sequence first little bit from the underside then the topside. This is how you can prevent your chainsaw getting stuck.
Ja sitten yksi huomio, kannattaa ottaa selvää rakennusoikeudesta vesistöjen lähellä. On mahdollista, että tuo sijainti on laiton eli liian lähellä vesistöä. Taitaa nykymääräyksien mukaan pitää joidenkin kymmenien metrien etäisyys vesistöön, en muista tarkkaan. Pahimmassa tapauksessa juodut purkamaan/siirtämään tuon rakennuksen muualle.
I would hate to see all your work be destroyed because the foundation isn’t good. Please research different methods for foundations. Other than that, good job with getting your trees down. ❤👍
Please cut your angled cut further into the tree. Preferably 3/5th of the way in but 1/2 at least. Then cut 2 inches from the top of that cut on the other side, gravity will do the rest. Also keep your saw running, and burn the spruce branches to clear the space.
the way how you use a chainsaw (the most dangerous hand tool there is) frightens me, you never use the chain log (something your supposed to use every second your not actively using it) and you mostly saw things in the middle of the blade instead of closer to the machine where all the safety features are (like a piece that will catch the chain if it breaks and the spikes to lock into the wood to prevent kickback and hold it in place), you are going to have some kickback one day and it wont be pretty. also pls wear gloves preferably leather gloves while working with a chainsaw

Noin lähelle rantaa ei saa rakentaa. Vähintään 25 metrin päähän rannasta. Ettet tekisi nyt turhaa työtä🤔
A tip on the wedges while felling. It looks like you pound them into the the hinge. two stacked wedges (double) or a thicker one will give more control. Often it looks like pounding to a stop and hoping it will be enough to topple the tree.
Do not use birch. It won’t last long
Great Felling,, both trees had excellent cuts, and dropped perfectly…
That doesn't look right
Wach some how 2 video
Hi there. Love your videos. Just an FYI, after felling a tree, take your saw and quickly shave the splinters off the stumps. I have seen some horrific injuries from those razor blades!
Dude love you channel and what you're doing but that foundation is not computing at all please revisit your thoughts about that foundation whatever you put on it will not be good please it would being my anxiety for you way down
It's great to see your confidence growing! Well done! Now, you need a puppy! ❤️❤️
I've got to add to the list of suggestions here that frost is going to cause issues. Soil retains water that freezes and expands, causing heaving so you either have to dig the foundation down to below how deep the frost goes in your area or replace the soil around and beneath the foundations with gravel that will drain any water. I also have a suggestion if you are looking for equipment, since you already have that chainsaw there is a rather cheap chainsaw-mill to get from Jula, article number 024340
Dude your english is perfect… you grew up in Finland? what a nice adventure guys, how are the constructions permits in Finland? you can do whatever you like in your land?
dude i love that quarter zip sweater you've got on
