Buffalo, New York — On July 10, 2024, at about 12:30 a.m., Buffalo Police Officers initiated a traffic stop in the area of Kensington Avenue at Poultney Avenue for an apparent speeding violation and tinted windows. During the stop, officers noticed a 6-year-old boy in the front passenger seat without a seat belt. When asked for his driver’s license, 25-year-old Dae’von Roberts admitted he did not have it with him but provided another form of identification. Upon checking the ID, officers found no record of a valid driver’s license for Roberts.

When asked to step out of the vehicle, Roberts instead sped away, with one officer hanging onto the car door. As the vehicle accelerated to over 60 MPH, the officer drew his weapon and shot Roberts multiple times. Both the officer and Roberts fell out of the vehicle. The officer immediately ran to the car and safely pulled the 6-year-old boy from the front seat. The child was unharmed. Officers on the scene administered first aid to Roberts, who was then transported to Erie County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The officer involved was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital. A subsequent search of the vehicle, which was not registered to Roberts, revealed a 9 mm Taurus handgun under the driver’s seat. Roberts was identified as the half-brother of Jaylen Griffin, a 12-year-old boy who went missing in 2020 and whose remains were discovered in April 2024. Records show that Roberts was recently indicted in June on charges of firing gunshots following a vigil for his brother on April 22. Although no one was injured in that incident, Roberts faced felony charges of attempted assault and weapons possession. He had pleaded not guilty and was released under supervision.

  2. This is why cops can’t be hero’s anymore. I cannot believe the amount of comments blaming the cop for this. Saying “he shouldn’t have held on”, well for one we don’t know the logistics and if he was able to react in time. Two, possibly he had some actual empathy for a child unlike you? Willing to put himself in harms way to protect a young child from a reckless driver? It’s unbelievable, a cop saves a child’s life and you decide to hate on him instead of the guy endangering the kid and breaking laws. Unbelievable!!! Argue whether it’s self defense all you want but what about the KID?! Who’s gonna protect him!?!

  3. Black community needs to really get the shit together. Yall be listening to crappy rap at 6am when yall can listen to prayers feed your soul.. this kid is more concerned about phone then, cop chase and a shooting that just occurred.

  4. Why why why go on a high speed chase with a child in the car let alone go on a high speed chase PERIOD? I understand why the officer held on. He noticed the guy putting the car in drive and tried to stop him but before he knew it the car was going so fast! Literally! Then it was a risk to just let go because the left lane goes the opposite way, and if the officer would have let go any later he may have clashed with that yellow truck that went by. Remember everything is happening so fast so it would have been a matter of seconds before that truck passed them. Crazy

  5. K there needs to be some kind of differentiation between ‘viewer discretion’ and ‘hardened viewer discretion’, like I’ve seen enough shit to be pretty desensitised to ‘viewer discretion’ level stuff, but as soon as there was a boy in the car… knowing what’s about to go down, just sad, man.

  6. As a black person who agrees that there are definitely a lot of cases of police using deadly force when not needed…this is not one of them. The officer gave him several warnings and even pleaded with him saying he would get out. His nephew was also begging him to stop and he didn’t. It was literally do or die. The officer also ran to make sure the kid was okay. This is unfortunate and I hate to blame someone for their own death but this was no ones fault but his.
