The pictures don’t look great, the neighborhood isn’t the best, and the estate sale manager is a bit off. But somehow, this combination leads us to a 50-year-old house brimming with treasures on the first day of half-price sales!
We’re scoring big at this sale in St. Louis, Missouri, where everything is priced lower than thrift store items, and there are so many fantastic vintage pieces just waiting to be snapped up. We grab a signed sports pennant for $2.50, adorable dog paint-by-numbers for just 50 cents each, Pyrex pie plates for a few dollars, Blendo tumblers for nearly nothing, and so much more! How is a $100 Fostoria cake plate only $5 on day 2? Watch as we explain why we had a feeling this under-advertised sale would have something special, even though the promotional materials didn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Our excitement continues as we thrift our way around St. Louis Lambert Airport. While the St. Vincent de Paul store doesn’t quite impress, another thrift shop offers amazing deals on 1930s Manhattan glass (25 cents each!), lovely antique portrait plates, and a Hummel Full Bee candleholder priced so low it’s a steal—even by today’s standards!
Max & Moo’s, a charming antique-thrift hybrid store in the airport neighborhood, also catches our attention. With affordable 1930s dining furniture, a stunning 1920s triple mirror under $50, and a vast selection of early 20th-century pottery, porcelain, and glass, we can’t resist exploring further. We leave with some sparkling 1960s rhinestone jewelry (including a pair of signed Kramer earrings), feeling so glad that our estate sale instinct led us to this unexpected area for fantastic vintage and antique finds at thrift prices.

We have one estate sale company in my area that charges a fixed fee to conduct the estate sale and actually does most of the estate sales in this area. Having gotten a large fee to conduct the sale the company prices everything very high and every estate they have handled that I have attended (about 15) the house is still full at the end of the sale. No incentive to sell because the estate sale company got paid a very high fee to conduct the estate sale.
At age 19, I bought my first new car. A ‘73 Mustang. The color was green-gold and I paid $3600. I loved that car!

I am not a fan of estate sales. The people running them in Chicago and the area tend to be greedy and overprice everything. And the attitudes on some of them, not great although I do understand they are alot of work. Personally, the prices are average to a bit high at this sale. She was in my opinion right to price these things as she did. Not great stuff, most should be donated. Agree with you that she should of paid the money and advertised better though.
Why keep talking about how she is running the sale! Be glad you are getting all the deals! You seem to be fixated on the fact…

I grew up in the St. Louis Metro area in the 1950s through the 1970s (Illinois side of the Mississippi). It’s so much fun watching you shop the area! I wanted to back a U-Haul up to that estate sale myself! (We ate off of Melmac back then. I found out it could actually break when I was setting the table by tossing the plates like dealing playing cards. One landed on its edge and rolled off the table, landing on its edge. It split. 😂😂😂 Teenagers!)

The dollies were all cotton, ecru colour. People liked to starch them after making them so they lay flat and kept to the shape intended. The glass wear was nice. I still like using refrigerator glass storage containers. Those butter dishes can be used either up or down. Butter dome, or for left overs used the other way. I buy pyrex, corning ware of any pattern, size, for the right price and when I make a dish for someone because they are ill, bereavement, birth of baby etc, they can heat it up in the oven or microwave, I don't mind if I don't get the dish back. If I do, that's great. I like the paint by number dogs. Such a good price for everything and the wooden furniture has been so well kept.
