As I fan who started watching the wwf around wrestle mania 3 aged ten.
We all had a luv 4 brett as he was pretty much the only thing that had kept the wwf even slightly cool for years,! But by 1997 the gimmick had grown very old and we were abit bored of him. He had been around for about a decade by then. (And alot of proper adults were still associating the WWF with steroids) It was definitely time for something new.!
Big Bret fan here but he was a fool for thinking he could just drop the belt the next night after SS and just leave, Vince couldn’t take a chance with Bret showing up on Nitro with the belt, now obviously that wouldn’t have happened with legal but Vince couldn’t take a chance with Nitro being live the next night for Bischoff announcing he had just signed the current WWF champion, Vince had to think on his feet and get the belt off Bret, Bret was a big baby for not doing business and dropping the title to Michaels
Bullshit. Bret just didn't fit into the attitude programming, he was a wrestler of a bygone era, I wouldn't have kept him either. But if you wanted to keep him you would have, just like Vince could have kept Nash and Hall if he wanted to.
I was always wondering what the hell WWF would've done with Hogan in 97? He couldn't be Hollywood Hogan there. And this was PEAK ALTITUDE era. Stone Cold was the the guy. Hogan would've ruined it.
