I think that Trump's comments were more intended to get Germany and France to actually spend 2% of their GDP on NATO and their own defense. When the US is spending vast sums of money to keep Europe safe it feels like we are being taken for granted. In 2016 when Trump was elected, many felt that Europe was getting a free ride at our expense. The NATO treaty said that all NATO countries needed to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense. Only four European countries (out of 24) were at or above 2% – Greece, the UK, Estonia and Poland. France was at 1.78%, Norway was 1.54%, Portugal was 1.38%, Italy was 1.11%, Spain was .91% and Germany (the richest European country) was only at 1.19%. The US was spending 3.61% of our GDP on defense. I viewed it as more of a motivational threat than any real desire to dismantle NATO.
Hey man, Vox is American propaganda. You should use other sources to get the facts
Yeah, we got our fingers in everyone’s pie, good and bad. I like some of what trump did, yes he’s also an idiot, I also liked some of what Obama did, mainly regarding vets, I also think he was an idiot, haha…along with most in government. I hate on pretty equally and fairly on both sides, unless they are for freedom, of all. That being said, no damn handouts, costs too much, we already spend more than we should. As to pulling out of areas? And leaving them on their own, no I do t think we should, but if those nations aren’t going up their defense spending, and take some of the load off of us, then they should pay us, some, if not most/all of the difference, in US dollar value, or equivalent goods we need, that they make, of they are good enough quality to be used. As we are doing it for free now. Now, of they won’t pay the difference in their increase in defense spending, then fine, have fun in your own, we’ll help you, out of our own self interest, after you get wrecked, and we’ll rebuild you to our liking. So deal with it. You’re either against us, with us, or don’t mean shit, if you won’t contribute. People will think that’s harsh, just remember it’s our labor going into the equipment used, the ones making it, paid our wages, out our tax money, and our boys and girls dying and getting maimed, to protect others. And most other places don’t give us anything, for what we do…and we actually don’t take anything from their econom, we rebuild them into a second world nation, once again at our cost.
luther burbank and steel, the rest was easy
you guys are great. keep up the good work.
1:55 greatly exaggerated.
America's geographic isolation with respect to Europe and it's natural resources are the most simple explanation for it's military dominance. Add the worlds third largest population and fourth largest physical size on top of National pride like no other in the world and there you have it
Can you post the link to the original video
There is a need for a selective amount of alliances throughout the world, but the idea of expanding NATO, interfering in other governments and trying to dictate peace throughout the world sooner or later it becomes self defeating, at some point that nation becomes no better than the governments you're trying to defend against, Just my opinion of course
7:22, yes Russia is massive however the graphics showed you after an expansion during the time period. By that time. It was called the Soviet Union and there were many nations under it's sphere. So what you are looking at is not only Russia, but Many European nations enslaved under the Russian Soviet Union.
As a born and bred American, I'm embarrassed about our horrific empirical actions around the world…particularly after the tragic events on 9/11/01. There's no question that the CIA's purpose and actions are to destabilize other Sovern Nations for "our" capitalist corporations to take advantage of the deadly circumstances for PROFIT. While many Americans are, in fact, waking up, cognitive dissonance is strong in this country. It's shameful, and NOT in my name :/
Just starts out as a lazy history video. People keep repeating “wholesale slaughter “ of Native Americans and it is flat out lazy history. The majority of native deaths occurred within a couple years of the Spanish landing in Florida. Upon contact with the natives disease spread like wildfire. There was no intent. The story later of a smallpox infected blanket appeared once in a journal and evidence shows it was never done. Estimated have the disease death above 20 million. The numbers from the Indian Wars are around 50,000. Smallpox caused wholesale slaughter, not war. We need to stop with the presentism. Two civilizations clashed and one of them won. Natives weren’t exactly peaceful. They were just as brutal as Europeans. The Aztecs collapsed because of that brutality to their surrounding tribes. The Spanish used them to conquer the Aztecs.
That map of the USSR is at the height of their expansion. Russia is still a huge country but it's now less so than depicted.
The 2D map we use is disseptive, Russia is NOT that big, it's the biggest country, but not that big. It can fit in the African continent. The US is half the size of Russia, and almost the same size as Canada
This is flat out wrong about pre World War I American development. It wasn't DC that drove early expansion in the 1880s through the 1910s. It was Wall Street, the robber barons, and the newspaper empire built by William Randolph Hearst. The financial sector and the newspapers of Hearst championed getting involved in foreign affairs and they backed American politicians who wanted to follow through with those ideas. In fact the Hearst newspaper empire pretty much generated the case for War with Spain in 1898 based on an unfinished investigation of the destruction of the Battleship Maine in Havana port. If anything President McKinley was pushed into a war by Hearst and the industrial tycoons of that era as they had the real driving power behind the nation at that time.
Furthermore the reason the US wanted many of it's Pacific territories was because they wanted to be able to protect US citizens and trade overseas in Asia which required coaling stations to supply the modern navy with fuel and supplies. It was because the United States citizens and investments in Asia that had come under danger in local riots and incidents that they went hard after those islands. Because with those islands the US military could protect both American citizens abroad as well as American interests.
Oh if the United States pulls out of NATO don't worry about Asia or the Middle East it's Europe that screwed United States pays and supplies 90% of NATO's forces and Germany has done declared back in 2017 that if the United States pulls out of NATO they will too so you're looking at Eastern Europe going back to the 1500s now the United States is going to break off from NATO it's just a matter of when but when it does let's just say that France Spain Norway Italy Greece the UK times are going to get rough pretty quick and you'll find out how fast friends can become enemies
What Trump was saying was, countries can’t always depend on the US for defense all the time. They need to contribute to their own defense too.
The US first and only, forever. Other countries don't have our interests or the interests of freedom in mind, they're just trying to do what's best for them. Trump is right.
You should look up the history on Alaska how America bought it and later turn to be a big mistake for Russia selling it
Please watch video history of our Star Spangled Banner. We fought British Empire 2 times for our independence!!
Millie, he doesn't talk for 4 hours. I don't think he's ever talked more than 3. LOL
We've owned Alaska since 1867, but it didn't become a state until 1959–within a few months of Hawaii.
Although he called them the American Virgin Islands, they're actually the U.S. Virgin Islands, with the nearest British Virgin Island just a few miles away.
What you're seeing at 7:26, James, is the Soviet Union, which was composed of Russia and 14 republics, which became separate countries back in the '90s: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, and Armenia. The loss of these 14 countries' territories substantially shrank it from what's shown above, losing territory 93% the size of the USA.
Another reason for backing Israel is that the US has more Jewish citizens than any other, including Israel.
We must disassemble NATO.
The reason nobody takes the UN seriously is because of NATO.
The US was also a member of SATO south asian treaty organization, which is how the US ended up in Vietnam after the French got crushed there. Thankfully, SATO no longer exists.
Donald Trump, contrary to many of his immediate predecessors, did not involve America in a new war. He ended US involvement in Afghanistan and Syria. So he actually did start to chip away at some of the overseas military presence of United States.
The US policing the world benefits humanity and also the US itself. It's win/win. Isolationism is stupid for a country this large, and invested in the global economy. Also, if the US stops controlling the world, who does? Russia/North Korea/China/Iran? THAT is why anyone who doesn't support the US is evil.
“Wholesale slaughter of the indigenous peoples”
Not exactly what happened, but I guess he can live in whatever fairytale world he wishes.
Love your channel great content. I often watch this with my children. To bring up conversations that are not normally brought up. Within the school system. I know you said your channel is not for kids. But it has been a sounding board for me and my children to discuss their points of view on things around the world. Keep up the great work. From the United States of America Ohio
The U.S.A.'s first step to empire was its invasion, conquest, and occupation of the Confederate States of America–to protect its primary revenue source. As General Lee predicted after the War, the U.S. would become like all other empires "aggressive abroad and despotic at home."
The real problem with blanket military protectoin given by the United States to so many other countries is that the money for this comes out of the pocket of the US taxpayer. We literally pay for the massive social programs that these countries citizens enjoy with our own toil. This is why we also have the largest per capita homeless and poverty percentage in the devoloped world.
Russia has a smaller population believe it or not
This video is pretty politically biased and sucks. I'm sorry you had to watch this. One example is statements he made about Trump were inaccurate. Trump said he would and did use tariffs to achieve free trade. If China puts 50 billion in tariffs on American cars, why in the heck would it make sense to not do the same? That isn't free trade, that's being screwed. Doesn't mean he didn't believe in free trade lol. Also he was pointing out that the US spends massive amounts of money on protecting European allies and helping to train their troops while most nato members spend a very small amount on their military budgets and take advantage of the American taxpayer….
“Wholesale slaughter of indigenous peoples” is a hyperbolic way to explain what was happening back then. It’s far more nuanced than that. As most things in life are. The natives weren’t hunted down and exterminated.
Russia isn't that big that was the soviet union
No more videos like this please, its really repetitive and makes me feel like people are telling you to react to the same kind of videos. Why don't you watch videos that shows what America is really like? I would like to see that instead of seeing this, the same old videos of how America is perfect and can take down everyone and its not true. Our country is failing and getting destroyed by the people in charge, we are no better than Russia. George w Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and invaded there country and killed hundreds of thousands of people. Sound familiar?
América es un continente!
The USA became a superpower because they've stolen and forced Enslaved Africans to work the plantations among other things to boost their economy. The "American Dream" is at the expense of enslaved Africans and ancestors The End.
