Abra has only been at the farm for 3 days now. Whilst the biting/snapping/nipping is persistent and expected … she’s a Maligator! … she is also showing us all her other typical breed qualities that make her the perfect dog for some serious jobs in the world. Just a day following her progress and you see why she is a magnificent dog with a person who knows what she needs. But in the hands of someone with little experience, like where she has come from, she can get herself into a lot of trouble. This is not a dig at people, it’s about knowing more about these dogs in our lives whatever breed or personality they may be and doing what’s best for them. Abra is giving us all a little insight into a breed that has been bred for a very specific purpose. Ignoring that and trying to make her fit as a square peg in a round hole, will never work. Dogs are living creatures and have so many varying and important needs. Abra is showing us some of hers.

This is going to be an amazing adventure for all the Evans, 2 and 4 legged alike. She is absolutely amazing; diving after Luke 2 days in. 😳 That focus and intensity on learning is staggering. It’s like when Joey came but on hyperspeed. The long leans onto Luke’s back and eating the splashes “a la Jeddo” was hilarious. The Pie must show this new upstart who’s boss. 😂 I’m in love with Abra’s ears. The other doggies are such good boys and girls about this new stranger taking up some of Dad’s attention. They say “keep the Maligator’s teeth AWAY please and thank you!” I have watched you teach what feels like hundreds of doggies to swim and I am just in shock at how fast she’s taken to it and DOCK DIVING?!

Luke, you are hyper excited for this challenge and opportunity to work with Abra. Just listening to you, I sense you feel rejuvenate, love this new tasks…it's like you got a new job, new purpose! Who here has picked up that Luke has fallen in love with Abra, and that Luke's deep secret desire is for Abra to join his pack…a breed he has always wanted to have as part of his crew? I, for one, hope it happens cos Luke deserves to be granted this wish!

Question: Luke, would you consider training abandoned or rescued Belgian Malanois/Dutch Shepherds in animal shelters across NSW/Australia, who can later go on to become dogs working with the police-military-tactical units?
How do you stop a dog like Abra from becoming jealous of Sam or the children? I do realise you'll train Abra to recognise the family as an extension of you, but I am curious given that Abra is focusing so much on Luke in the pool session particularly. I realise it's early days in her training, but it does strike me as something that could be an issue without all the care and training you are putting in, Luke.
Abra's level of intelligence and sheer will to always be on the go is just astounding. I can see why these dogs are so prized in the military – it's that constant stimulation and protective instinct .

I'm curious to know if Abra would do well with an obstacle course as her regular "work".

The never ending energy Abra has as a pup is amazing. Not once have I seen her take a little nap between activities like pups usually do as they run out of steam. It is hard to believe she is only 4 months old. Miss Violet even when she is stuck under water by the bigger dogs she is not scared or fearful and she is straight back in, she is awesome. ❤
I developed so much respect for the Belgian Malinois learning about their military and police work. I know full well I could never own or train one as they really are unsuitable to be anything other than serious working dogs. So I never thought I would get to watch one be trained. Imagine my joy at realising Luke was taking on Abra. I knew they were bright and responsive and love to work…but watching her focus on Luke as a PUPPY is just amazing.
The biggest thing I noticed in the first video or two was just how much effort you were putting into her, and that is the best thing about watching Luke train her: I'm watching a master at work using all his skills.
I am so glad that Luke is enjoying training her. I feel like her of all people has earnt the right to train a dog like this, and to enjoy it.

Abra is interesting to watch because she is so willing to really try anything. Her snapping at water droplets is fun to watch but also demonstrates that powerful jaw. Her commitment to learn is so strong. Fun watching the pups and the go pros. I love to observe the varied swimming techniques. I love to watch the golden’s coat in water. Listen to Luke. I’ve worked with handlers of the breed and have put on the bite suit. Please understand the Belgian Malinois is a very high energy dog. One handler I worked with would run the dog call to call for pretty much 8 straight hours go home then have to take the dog on 5 mile run then an hour and a half in the pool to burn off enough energy to sleep through the night. These dogs will not get tired before the owner/handler and if left with massive amounts of energy without an outlet will become destructive. I love the breed but will personally never own one as I have to much respect for them.

I am so glad that Abra is with Luke. I have huge respect for the role these dogs have in the services. Last night I was wasting my time watching TikTok and a video popped up of a mountain bike cyclist getting attacked by young Belgian Malinois dogs who were off leash. The owners struggled to get them under control. The dogs even lunging at the owners. The cyclist was bitten several times. I shudder to think if a child had been there. This video is on YouTube. Dogs deserve responsible owners. It breaks my heart when dogs get themselves in trouble being with the wrong owners. Abra is in the right place getting the respect and training all dogs deserve. Given Abra's intelligence and interest in working, do you think Joey might be more likely to be friends with her compared to other dogs? Or do other factors come into play like Abra's age, being new to the farm, etc? And the fact Abra's not a cat! 😂😻🌹

I love your green collar Shadow, that colour really suits you & you look bootiful in it 😍 Abra is a fast & eager learner, she seems to love the excitement of the farm environment & she trusts Luke implicitly. I love that he gently immerses the not-so-keen swimners into the pool occasionally, ensuring their swimming skills are still up to par even though they may not use them often 🥰🙏❤️🐶

Watching Abra and Luke, she is a little sponge for training with him. The dock diving/lure is fun to watch. Chance is looking at Abra like, "Uncle Luke why does she get to ride your shoulder and I don't, UH?" "Look Uncle Luke I fits right under Roscoe, for now." Hope is experiencing new things and I see the joy and happiness all over her face and she does the wiggle.

Holy cow! I have been looking at videos about the Malinois breed and my mind is blown. They really are next level canines. I can see why Luke is excited about having little Abra in his care. Her potential is astounding. I wonder how long the Farm will be enough for her, sharing her hero’s attention with 20+ other dogs.
Thank you, thank you for having this discussion about understanding the needs and behaviour of the breed before adopting or buying. Being involved with chow chow rescue and adopting this particular breed, I can say without hesitation how important it is to understand and be realistic about the dogs needs and behaviour BEFORE adopting or buying. Chow chows in particular require a great deal of training regarding socialization, sometimes throughout their life. Patience is a must and just like Abra, they require their owners to be leaders or else they will ignore them and develop potential dangerous behaviour. Give them the balance they need and they are the most loving and loyal companions…but I believe that to be true about every dog really.
Abra has found her perfect teacher in Luke. Maybe this is an opportunity for Luke to specialize in search and rescue with Abra?
