Brazil plane crash | Former NTSB investigator weighs in on possible cause of accident



A passenger plane crashed into a gated residential community in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state on August 9, 2024, killing all 61 people aboard and leaving a smoldering wreck, officials and the airline said.

Officials did not say if anyone was killed on the ground in the neighborhood where the plane landed in the city of Vinhedo, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of the metropolis of Sao Paulo. But witnesses at the scene said there were no victims among local residents.

The airline Voepass said that its plane, an ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, was headed for Sao Paulo’s international airport Guarulhos with 57 passengers and 4 crew members aboard when it crashed in Vinhedo. It provided a flight manifest with passenger names, but not their nationalities. A prior statement had said there were 58 passengers.

“The company regrets to inform that all 61 people on board flight 2283 died at the site,” Voepass said in a statement. “At this time, Voepass is prioritizing provision of unrestricted assistance to the victims’ families and effectively collaborating with authorities to determine the causes of the accident.”

  1. dont let the funeral director suit fool you he really knows his stuff, not just tooting his horn, also knows about specialty dogs and any other topic you want to ask him about, even stuff he isnt familiar with.

  2. I love this guy! Always love his analysis and expertise. He's truly the best out there. BTW, I have a crippling fear of flying lol. I'll stay on the ground. I have to take an ativan when my kids are on a plane. 😢

  3. Yes, thanks. As a Brazilian i want to meet some theorys and kind of things that MAY cause the aciddent. Its just curiosity, its what normal people loooking for! I know that only the official agency will say what happen actually BUT i don't understand the Brazilian "youbtube xperts" saying "we dont can say anything, just wait for the official paper" bla bla.

  4. i don't t now anything formal about planes, but my gut tells me he mistaken the lever that control's the angle of attack of the propeller blades, instead of the lever than controls the flaps (Just guessing)

  5. Great commentary. I fly an ATR for a job and had a previous career as an engineer maintaining them. Pleasing to see someone stating facts and laying the situation out clearly. No conjecture or guessing. 'The facts will speak for themselves'. Those of us at the pointy end of this aircraft are watching any outcomes with interest. We have our suspicions, but they will be kept silent until a formal investigation is complete.

  6. July 26th 2013 22:00 UTC – Trip Linhas Aereas Flight 5591: An ATR-72-212A registration PP-PTU had a Severe Icing Event near Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, Follow the CENIPA Report:

    The aircraft took off from the Zumbi dos Palmares International Aerodrome (SBMO), Maceió – AL, to the Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães Aerodrome (SBSV), Salvador – BA, at 2110 (UTC), to carry personnel with 4 crewmembers and 58 passengers on board. Around 2142 (UTC), on FL160, the aircraft entered a region that had the conditions of ice accretion. Although the aircraft anti-icing was activated, the air pneumatic de-icing was not activated by the flight crew. Then, there was a significant degradation of aircraft performance, leading to a reduction in the Indicated Airspeed (IAS). The aircraft initial cruise speed was 202kt. The aircraft lost 10 kt prior to the activation of anti-icing. The crew heard a noise described as similar to that of a compressor stall, followed by a loud vibration. The aircraft reached 180 kt when the power levers were reduced to 20% TQ, leading the IAS to reduce down to 148 kt, and the autopilot was disconnected. The crew did not identify the cause of the vibration. Approximately 4 second after the autopilot was disconnected, the Angle of Attack (AOA) increased, resulting in the activation of the stall protection systems (stick shaker and stick pusher). The pilots counteracted the pusher, which resulted in the loss of aircraft control. During the loss of control, Pitch Uncouping Mechanism (PUM) triggered. The crew declared emergency and, upon reaching the FL110, the control of the aircraft was restored. Landing was performed in a controlled way on SBSV. The aircraft was not damaged. The 4 crewmembers and 58 passengers left unharmed.
