Bofors 40mm L/70 | What does this anti-aircraft gun offer for the current threats?

We are investigating the Bofors 40mm L/70, the 70-year-old weapon that defies the time. #bofors #aagun #airdefence

Which requirement opened the way for the creation of the L/70?
What are the features of the anti-aircraft gun?
Why was the L/70 less successful in the market than its predecessor, the L/60?
Is the L/70 a better solution for the current air threats, especially kamikaze drones, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles?

Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books. They tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyses, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. You can find in our videos technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let’s investigate the weapons together when the Second Cold War is rising.

  1. Namaste All,

The good old 40/70 Bofors Triple A Gun, served the Royal Artillery light Air Defence Regiments, very well for many years until being replaced by Blowpipe / Javelin / Starburst / Starstreak series of Shoulder-fired MANPAD (MAN-Portable Air Defence) system and Rapier SAM (Surface to AIr) system too.

Maybe today the Royal Artillery and British Forces, need to look again at an modernised version of the good old Bofors 40/70 Cannon, as a basis for a new multi-role Anti-Air Weapon System, designed to engage anything from unmanned Aerial Vehicles, to Artillery Rocket's or Shell's, or Naval Gun Shell's, or Mortar Round, or Anti-Tank Rockets and Missiles, too.

Even engage Free Fall and Glide Precision Guided Munition (FF&G-PGM's) too, or engage Anti-ship Missiles and Cruise Missiles, even if possible engage Hypersonic travelling Missiles or Ballistic Missiles too, likes of Naval Close-In Weapon System (CIWS, or commonly calledˈSI-WIZː / SEE-WIZ by the US Navy) is a point-defense weapon system for detecting and destroying short-range incoming shells, missiles and enemy aircraft or helicopters or even small surface attack craft too.

A upgraded modernised Bofors Automatic Close-In Weapon 40/70 Cannon System (ACIW40/70S), which consisted of and a combination of built-in Passive-Active Radar and Daylight All Weather Night-time Optical Digital Camera Sight with Laser Rangefinding plus LIDAR sensor too, controlled by computers and operator, with either rapid-firing (300 to 400 rounds-a-mite) single or twin barrel cannons each with automatic feed magazines too, all mounted on automatic powered rotating turret.

Which could be interchangeable mounted onto either a armoured cab 6×6 or 8×8 or 10×10 all terrain lorry, or onto a all-terrain trailer, or house with in a Specialised Military Shipping Container, either a 6-metre or Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) basically or larger 12m or Two x Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (2TEU) Shipping Container so would be very easy to transportable by road and rail overland, or internationally by either sea and Container Ships or even by air in large civilian and military transport aircraft too.

Let alone could be mounted on to either these new Modular Armoured Fighting wheeled or Tracked Vehicles, which have interchange service modulars for different military roles.

Though if you added the likes of Vertical Launch Tubes say for 8 short-range (10 miles) Hypersonic Velocity Mach 8+ Missiles, maybe an upgraded version of Starstreak Missile. to the suggested idea of upgraded modernised Bofors Automatic Close-In Weapon 40/70 Cannon System (ACIW40/70S), you would have one very good High Mobility or Portable Air Defence, using infra-red, passive radar / ESM, or laser beam riding technology, or semi-active radar terminal guidance to guide missiles and gun to the targeted enemy aircraft, or missile, or drone threats.

However, the likes of the MoD and UK Politicians, are not the best at introducing new military hardware, or being ahead of the game as it were. As can be seen by how much trouble the RAF, Royal Navy and British Army plus Royal Marines are all in, over personnel recruitment and weapons procurement or introducing new weapons technology either in to HMF use!

  2. old fashioned flak is perfect against drones the issue with fighting jets etc was more computing time in the past was not fast enough to do the calculations in the short time between detection and engagement now it is, and with drones going a lot slower they are perfect targets for AA flak guns

  3. If old weapons like this can negate the threat posed by cheap and cheerful drone systems. We will see a brief return to service in places like Ukraine and other third world countries. Before they are surpassed by EW pulse weapons and other things.

  4. effective against a flock of low flying lazy geese. how many rounds can you fire before you have to take it off the line and re-fit. i guess you could use as a decoy to draw pointless artillery volleys
