Hello, Mazzy. I am a fan of your videos, have been following you for a couple of years now and I'm always innarested in seeing what you have come up with when there's a new video from you out there. However, there's one thing that bugs me, and I'm not really one of those "you didn't get this and you didn't get that" – but, and I have heard you getting this fact wrong before, so, I am asking myself: How come you, after all these years, have failed to get the fact that Bootleg Series Vol 4 (love that vinyl edition!) was not, I repeat, not recorded at The Royal Albert Hall. I mean haven't you noticed the quotation marks on the cover, the record was issued in 1998. People, I mean the bootleggers, even the guys at CBS, got it wrong in the 1970s when the bootleggers got hold of the tapes (of the electric section). Trade Mark of Quality named it Live at Royal Albert Hall, since that is what it said on the tape box. But since then, everybody and his grandmother, except you, dear Maslow, have got the fax straight that the concert on Bootleg Series Vol. 4 was taped in Manchester at The Free Trade Hall. This is not nitpicking, Mazzy, this is like saying that WW2 began in 1941. However, keep up your otherwise good work. But I am watching you.
Great video – thank you. I too have already bought the 10 LP version as this is a favorite album of anyone. P.S. Vinyl Me Please's coming "Essentials" title is Bob too…"Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan's 1966 mercurial masterpiece, is the VMP Essentials Record of the Month for December 2022. Our edition is pressed on 2LP "Blonde on Blonde" colored vinyl from AAA lacquers cut from the original MONO master tapes by Ryan Smith, with Listening Notes from Michael Simmons and an art print by Elio Moavero." Enjoy! 🙂
Nice overview of all the bootleg series releases, I needed to see that. Thanks Mazzy. But holy crap that complete cutting edge set is immense. Glad it exists though.
Really enjoyed this video of the Dylan bootleg series, after seeing your vinyl sets I ordered the first one in vinyl. So glad Dylan is continuing with this series they have all been fantastic. Take care!
Is it my imagination or is it actually the case that both outtakes "Dreamin' Of You" and "Marchin' To The City" are not included? If that's the case then, I suppose "Fragments" is a fairly apt title.
You need to do a sequel which showcases the the multiple box sets that protected copyrights – 1963, 1964,1965, (all released in extremely limited quantities), plus the more easily available Bob Dylan 1970 (which is a good companion piece to Another Self Portrait and features George Harrison). P.S. The Real Royal Albert Hall set was eventually officially released as a stand alone and as part of the box set that contained every concert on the UK tour. (You could include that box set in your sequel video, plus the box set of shows from the Rolling Thunder Review tour too). Nuclearmagenta loves you!
Hey Mazzy, volume 6 was only released on vinyl by Classic Records. You can find them used, but very pricey. I was hoping for a reissue like they did with volumes 1-3 and volume 5, but nothing yet.
I've always loved how Dylan has developed, never pandering to anyone, I loved that the bulk of the RARW's tour included a majority of the songs from same album, TOOM, am so looking forward to this release, hope your keeping safe and well Sir,
A nice overview of the Bootleg Series . I only have a few of them , including the Live 1975 and the Tell Tale Signs ( which I like more every time that I hear it ) I was lucky enough to see the Rolling Thunder Revue show at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1975 . Mr. Dylan kindly invited Gordon Lightfoot to take part in the concert , and , of course , Joni Mitchell . It was a terrific show . I also enjoy the concert footage in the Rolling Thunder Revue documentary that came out a few years ago , as it brings back great memories of that concert . Thanks for showing the whole set . Cheers !
He Mazzy, Late to the Bootleg series, sadly the mid 90's vinyl which were some of the best and being Classic Records releases are very limited and expensive. Most other vinyl bootleg releases are around original retail, watching for 2+ years and the CR items are just over my budget. I had the PM 80 7" in my cart and just couldn't justify the $650.00 plus price, returned 2 days later convincing myself it was reasonable, "sold out" did you take the plunge? Be well.
I prefer to just do the CDs when it comes to the bootleg series. Though I might get the the 2LP set just to have the possibly stripped down Album. But i've already pre-ordered the 5 cd set. I"m really excited for that. I wish The Beatles had a bootleg series. Though yes now they kinda do with these Giles Martin Deluxe boxsets. But if they had started years earlier maybe around the time of Anthology. And 3 career spanning Anthology albums could have been the equivalent to a sample CD. Again with what we are getting now, with the boxsets the Anthology albums pretty much are. I do buy the CD and Vinyl when it comes to The Beatles. The Bob Dylan in mono vinyl is really nice!
Speaking of Woodstock (real town) that was part of my territory back in the 90's, one large customer employees would see him regularly, at the main street bakery one day while I was picking up some delicacies, he was shopping also (very hard to recognize) appeared in disguise but I didn't want to intrude, after he left the shop confirmed it was him 3 feet away!
Hey Mazzy – Like you I love all the Bob Bootleg sets and the care and attention that goes into curating them. If I am honest I probably listen to them more than the original albums – and I listen to them a lot👂. Unlike some tracks that might appear on big boxsets and are sometimes wart's and all noodlings, that can be a fascinating insight to the germination of song construction but can be a little tiring after the 10th listen, Bob's bootleg series all by and large seem to stand as complete songs in themselves, in a old light through new windows kind of way. To all the naysayers I think that they are pretty good value – many of the tracks on that final CD were released on the third disc of the crazily expensive (an exception to the series) 3 CD set version of 'Telltale Signs'(as I remember you seemed to be paying a lot for a whole heap of postcards plus only one extra disc subsequently at the time I passed and went with the 2 CD set). Like you say they should be included for historical continuity. I know TTS is a bit of a mish-mash, but it is still one of my favourite sets, and 'Cross the Green Mountain', for me at least, is up there with 'Blind Willie McTell' for emotional chills. (I know it bombed box office wise but I am a big 'Gods and Generals' fan – the Scorsese 'Rolling Thunder Revue A Bob Dylan Story' – on Netflix – is also very good and kicks 'Renaldo and Clara' to the kerb). Thanks for another great video Mazzy. Like you I've preordered the my big boxset, though in CD format – pleased I'm not a vinyl guy as they are asking over NZD$200 here- about USD$125 – for just the 4 vinyl disc set!). Cheers ✌
Thx, Mazzy! I didn’t realize the 10 LP was restricted to Bob’s store – got it preordered before sold out. Live 1964 is also the only Bootleg Series I lack on vinyl. Cutting Floor Complete is truly amazing.
Bootleg Series #8 Tell Tale Signs Bob Dylan records an old Stanley Brothers tune "The Lonesome River" with Dr. Ralph Stanley and Bob states that it was the highlight of his career! The song was originally released on Dr. Ralph Stanley's album "Clinch Mountain Country" and later released on #8 Tell Tale Signs for all the Dylan fans to enjoy as well! Great video Mazzy, thank you!
Onya Mazzy! This is a great overview of Dylan's Bootleg series. Appreciate your knowledge on this stuff – BUT when you really think about it, how amazing is the catalogue of Dylan songs?!? The man is just amazing in all he has done. Thanks for sharing again.
Hi Mazzy. I wanted to write to you about another individual in this community that deeply offended me during one of his live feeds publicly. His name is Patrick from The Vinyl Archivist. He was during one of his live record feeds and I wrote in how I love Pretty Things, Parachute. One of the other individuals on the live feed said, Hi Tara. Immediately Patrick wrote: I'm not convinced Tara is really a woman. I was immediately offended. The other individuals didn't respond. I was very upset. I reported this to YouTube.
Hey Mazz – thanks for the overview of the series. I jumped on 1-3 when it debuted and have picked up subsequent series on cd. The one I've really wanted was The Cutting Edge and your take here encouraged me to go push the 'purchase' button. So thanks for that. I will be getting the TOOM release but probably not the 10 disk version. Anyway – thanks again. Great resource you are.
Over 50 years and I have only 1500 items in my music collection. Because it's about 5 years listening if I play them all through. I just wondered how many CD's/records your collection is and how much listening time there is. Considering I'm now 62 and I do still buy a few new items, even if I trade some in I don't listen to, how many more does anyone need?
Thanks for posting! Any thoughts on Bob Dylan – 50th Anniversary Collection 1970? Not officially a Bootleg release but in the same style (I don't know the whole story there but it's release had something to do with European copyright law).
Hi Mazzy, loved this video, and my order is in. I love TOoM, in fact, my favourite Dylan post 97 studio album to date. Will forever remind me of listening on the walkman while meandering out of Bombay at dusk on a bus late 97….I've missed a few of these releases, so nos 15 and 16 on the way as well. My favourite to date is the 75 Rolling Thunder, agreed, those live versions are just superb…in fact, push comes to shove, 75/76 is my favourite Dylan period. Cheers, brilliant stuff.
Given my modest appreciation of Dylan, I really enjoy the Springtime in New York issue. The two discs with the Infidels band are a big highlight for me. And the cd volume is nicely packaged.
Great overview thanks ! I stopped listening to Bob when he released the worst record of his career Down In The Groove but when More Blood More Tracks was released I was back and hooked
You keep your damn finger out of my face you filthy repeat alternate outtake Dylan compromiser!
😜
Thanks Mazzy, yeah I havent really looked at this closely. Im in a musical hiatus and into non-American made movies at the moment. Voluntarily out of the loop with much coming out.
This is definitely one I am looking forward to if only for the remix. Well, if the remix is done well. Ok, time to go bitch in the SHF with the other cloud yellers about repeated outtakes and alts on this set 😡🤬
listening to my thumbdrive of The Complete Cutting Edge Directors Cut
I play the above probably every two months myself. So cool just to hear it in the background. Its like you can jump right in anytime ans enjoy. Like Dylan is at your house recording. Different vibe and listening experience. Didnt think Id like it as I have been burnt out on Dylan boots for some time. But I do. Wish now I had purchased Big Blue.

His last great album.
Hi Mazzy, love Bob Dylan, not a young man anymore, I’m 76. I just ordered Vol. 17 and have been trying to complete all the Vols
Fantastic and FAB
Mazzy’s video was so greatly appreciated
BOB a World Treasure still!

WOW….Mazzy…you were at The Last Waltz!! That must have been a friggin' surreal experience. I could only try to imagine what that was like.

The Vol. 6 live 1964 has been released on vinyl. I have it, a Classic Records release, like the Albert Hall.

The bootleg series boxes put the Beatles boxes to shame All the bonus cuts
Given my modest appreciation of Dylan, I really enjoy the Springtime in New York issue. The two discs with the Infidels band are a big highlight for me. And the cd volume is nicely packaged.
Thanks Mazzy – from your info just ordered the 10LP set from the Bob-ness website…
Great overview thanks ! I stopped listening to Bob when he released the worst record of his career Down In The Groove but when More Blood More Tracks was released I was back and hooked
That was a great overview video 👏
5 was my very first and a life changer for me. Still undecided on which version to get for the new box
I love time out of mind a Daniel Lanois Produced album?
I've just bought the 6CD's version of Cutting edge, looking forward to new bootleg series. Great video as usual

Ah well, cant have it all.
Dylan thought to become a poet. I always enjoy the bootlegs and listen on his work ethic.
