Vessel Operators Remember 9/11 Heroism, Work Daily to Keep Country Safe
On the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, America’s tugboat, towboat
and barge industry pauses to remember the nearly 3,000 Americans who lost their lives, and
also to acknowledge the inspiring bravery shown by first responders and everyday citizens on
that tragic day. One of the most notable acts of valor was the maritime evacuation of Lower
Manhattan – the largest water evacuation in American history – in which 500,000 people were
transported to safety by hundreds of vessels which answered a call from the U.S. Coast Guard
to converge on New York Harbor to aid in the evacuation. This extraordinary rescue was
memorialized in the 2011 short documentary film Boatlift, in which narrator Tom Hanks
noted that “for the first time in over one hundred years, boats were the only way on or off the
island of Manhattan.”
“America’s domestic maritime fleet plays a crucial role in transporting the nation’s commerce
every day and in ensuring our nation’s resilience during times of emergency,” said Tom
Allegretti, President & CEO of the American Waterways Operators. “The Boatlift heroes truly
lived up to one of the U.S. Merchant Marine’s oldest mottos, ‘acta non verba,’ or ‘deeds not
words.’”
“Longstanding maritime traditions of selflessness and concern for the welfare of others guided
the heroes of the September 11 Boatlift. Often, we take our American maritime industry for
granted as it works in quiet anonymity to keep our country and our economy moving. But, for
those who are familiar with this proud industry, these acts of heroism came as no surprise,”
Mr. Allegretti stated.
“Now more than ever, domestic maritime supports U.S. economic, homeland and national
security. American tugboat, towboat and barge operators are the eyes of ears of the nation’s
inland waterways, coastlines and critical harbors, ready to respond at a moment’s notice to a
natural disaster or security threat.”
The American Waterways Operators is the national trade association representing the tugboat, towboat
and barge industry which operates along the rivers, coasts, Great Lakes and harbors of the United
States. Barge transportation serves the nation as the safest, most environmentally friendly and most
economical mode of freight transportation. For more information about AWO, or to learn more about

  1. When this happened you both , by appearance , were probably children . . .👫
I'm watched these events unfold from right after the first plane hit , to the 24 hour coverage for the many days to come ! . 😲
True humanity was at its best , not only at the towers , but at the Pentagon and in the air in Pennsylvania as well! I . 👍 . 🇺🇸
I faithfully watch these programs every year on 9/11 and it never fails that a new story of heroism is told . I. 😔. .
It was America at its worst and America at its best ! .. 🇺🇸
How sad we need a crisis to show compassion for each other ! . . 😥 . 🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀

  2. First time on the east coast, only 20 years old and I was a hand on one of those boats. It happened so fast 12 hours felt like 2. Only stopping for gas. You didn't know how long it had been until you realized how hungry you were.

  3. Even me as an American never heard this story until this video. The largest sea evacuation of nearly half a million people people over a matter of hours you'd think would warrant more recognition. America is HORRIBLE at dealing with internal threats and conflict but we excel when it's attack from outside threats. We cab pull together in unison. I just wish we could see it today

  4. This story brought me back in time & in tears. Super heroes! I was at work. We all went to the theatre room to watch in horror & dismay. So many lost their lives. Thank you for taking time to watch this.

  5. Not to take away from these guys but the UK evacuation from Dunkirk had a lot further distance to go. If there was as short a distance as there was for these boat captains, they would have evacuated faster and possibly more of the men – I don't know how many were not saved in Dunkirk.

  6. We Americans are very divided, but put us in a bad situation, or attack us, and watch us rally like a God full of vengeance. I was 23, and teaching high school – my students sister was on the plane that hit the Pentagon. I lived in DC. Our media may have us split, our government may have us split, our opinions may have us split, but put us in this kind of situation, and none of it will matter. We will come together.

  7. I had just served 5 years as a Navy Corpsman and was getting out of the Navy the same day when the towers fell. I re-enlisted for another 5 years that day and requested a transfer to the first units deployed to take down those responsible and we were the first boots on the ground on October 7th 2001 in Afghanistan.

  10. I Believe my Family Visited Sections of “Lyons” and “O’Gaughans” (my grandparents names…one of them is my last name too).
Irish Americans used to be known for Firefighting And Police ….i realize most irish people to see Americans as family….but Irish Americans are proud of their heritage and struggles lived through as immigrants to America (railroad, labor, firefight, police, etc …the “alien immigrants” of the past …my family is here now because of Irish/german heritage (a great greatgrandma that traveled here with a parent (her twin stayed with the other parent in Ireland)

  11. Thank you for reacting to this! Your reaction was heartwarming! Subbed. I have ask so many people about the boatlift of 9/11, and no one has heard of it. I don't understand why this isn't common knowledge. This story is sad, but uplifting! These are true American heroes and their story should be told.

  12. If you enjoyed learning about the Boatlift, you might also like a story by American Journalist Tom Brokaw called Operation Yellow Ribbon. It's the story about Gander Newfoundland. They took in nearly 7000 "Plane People", doubling their population, when US airspace was closed. In all Canada would land 239 potential missiles and house and feed nearly 33,000 passengers for about 5 days. Gander's story was later turned into a hit, Tony award winning, musical called "Come From Away" ( can be viewed in its entirety on Apple Tv) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXbxoy4Mges&t=1971s

  13. My grandparents were all from Ireland. At least one NYFD fireman killed was a grandson of Irish immigrants. 343 were killed. The NYFD and NYPD were built by the Irish who came to NYC. I’m from St. Louis. In my 30s on 911. It was my generation Pearl Harbor. I called the USAF to join as a medic but was rejected for my eyes and age.

  14. That's just what you do. Your friend, neighbor, or someone you don't even know is in trouble . . . you help them. I'm so proud of all the people that helped that day and in the days that followed and, yet, still sad that it happened and that so many died. Our world changed after 9/11. Thank you for sharing this video. It's been a long time since I watched it the first time.

  15. I remember getting 2 phone calls on 9/11/2001. The first was my mom calling me and telling me to turn on the news, the second was my Marine Corps recruiter telling me I'd be going to Marine Corps boot camp in October 2001 instead of January 2002 and that I was not getting out of my contract, which never crossed my mind. Nothing could've motivated me more to finish boot camp than watching that event unfold. Every recruit in my platoon wanted to punish those cowards for what they did.
