Blood West Review – The Final Verdict

Blood West is a first-person stealth game that taps into the weird west sub-genre of horror. The game puts players into the shoes of an undead gunslinger tasked with ridding the land of evil. Along the way, the player will get their hands on a variety of weapons and magical tools to help them take on the grotesque enemies all over the world.

The gameplay loop in Blood West is quite simple; it encourages exploration since you need money to find supplies, and as you manage to explore further into the game’s grim worlds, you’ll end up getting your hands on powerful items and weapons. There is also an emphasis on stealth, especially in the early game, since you don’t quite have access to all of your defensive perks yet. Enemies can hit like a truck, so the title’s Thief-inspired stealth mechanics come in quite handy on that front.

  1. It's too expensive, and it's really hard early game. No amazing graphics to drink in and pull you through and endure the difficulty. It's worth 12$, not what they are asking for.

  2. Ive been thoroughly enjoying this game, ive been asking for a dedicated Supernatural Horror Wild West game since Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. Blood West has been expertly scratching that itch by thunder, just really want to find a Mare's Leg pistol in the game somewhere, it would be my most favourite thing!!

  3. People always seem to omit the important design genius of the game and the hindering system they entirely avoided:
    – No difficulty settings (This is a massive plus, a player should never be put on the spot to select how scaling is going to function based on nothing but guessing)
    – No game saves (This is a yet another genius as it uses a fantastic respawn mechanic that punishes mistakes. A player should never be thinking about artificially "saving" their progress and taking themselves out of the game world to do so)
    – No hand holding (Instead of massacring your screen with UI and pinpointers, the developer lets you explore a hefty hand crafted map at your own pace, your own way, at your own choice of sequence.
    – There is ZERO bullet sponging involved. (A lot of games of similar genre abuse this mechanic heavily, especially when they jam 300 pointless difficulties in the game and it NEVER works)

    – Oh, and I almost forgot to mention. This is a stealth based game WITHOUT X RAY VISION. Imagine that! In 2023 we get to actually sneak around corners without knowing what's behind them before peeking. Who would have thought it possible?

  4. Some comments here are more than disheartening. This is a game made by a small team on a budget. To accomplish the scope and complexity of Blood West there have to be some compromises in graphics. The gameplay is what should count and they absolutely nailed this.
To the people shitting on this game: Please just play your soulless AAA shlog and leave small indie teams alone.

  5. the casuals in the comments make me sick,i played all major titles of this year this is dfntly top 5 game of the year, the gameplay is amazing nd the monsters are original nd unique compared to every other monster/zombie game that all have the same monsters inspired from l4d,9/10 i take off one point for how hard it is to make money in the mid and end game.

  6. Great review! I'm super proud of this game and it's definitely going to stay at the top of the 'games I'm a part of' list. Would've loved to hear a bit more about voice acting (that just may be because I voiced 5 characters so there'd be a good chance you would talk about at least one xD), but all in all, a great review!
A bit sad to read some of the comments here being very – well, baboonish, for lack of a better word. The game is great and it feels rewarding to play. It just feels wrong to read the comments saying "graphics bad, game bad" when it was a stylistic decision to go with these types of graphics. Oh well, casual is as casual does.
    Cheers!
