Zangetsu is not the real Ichigo's zanpakuto but it is a manifestation of his Quincy's power.He is actually a spitting image of Yhwach from 1,000 years ago and, as part of Ichigo's soul, represented the Quincy portion of his powers.His real Zanpakuto is hollow Ichigo or his inner hollow and Ichigo only understand it when Zangetsu has gone.
