Bleach by Tite Kubo is a story unlike any I’ve ever covered. Over the years I’ve created a number of Blind Reviews for some of the most popular series to come out of Japan. And since completing both Naruto and One Piece, thousands of you have recommended I take a look at Bleach.

So, join me on this journey as I explore and experience Bleach’s manga for the very first time and once and for all complete my review series of the Big 3! Covering the adventures of Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Uryu and Rukia won’t be easy! But I’m sure it’ll be worth it! Next up on the chopping block is the Soul Society arc! Let’s see what the land of Soul Reapers and Hollows has in store for us!

  1. This is my biggest gripe with battle anime as well. If you don’t know what can kill a character, besides plot, we are not invested in the fight and we never know what to fear. Part of what made AOT great was the knowledge that normal human body limits were rules and their unrelenting commitment to kill people off made the fights gripping and full of tension.

  2. You could also associate Kurotsuchi with the evil Japanese scientists of Unit 731, who experimented on civilians and POWs. But then again, Japan refuses to acknowledge the atrocities to this day.

  3. I would like to see Mark talk a bit more about the relationships between the characters as there were quite a few he skipped over in this section of the video, like Jushiro and Shunsui deciding to go against the head captain who thought of them like sons or the relationship between Yoruichi and Soi-Fon and their fight in the woods, heck even the whole Momo plot between her and the likes of Gin, Kira, Toshiro and of course Aizen.

Hopefully he breaks down his thoughts more about these in future videos but so far I am glad to see him enjoying his journey through Bleach 🙂

  4. 20:25 to be fair I don't think One Piece has ever treated blunt force trauma as a lethal force, I think a better comparison are the times when characters survive point blank explosions until that one time on whole cake island.

  5. Uhhhhhhh that twist genuinely made me pause my binge for a dolid few minutes just to question wtf just happened like omg also how tf can you get the full Izen experience without strait up stopping the sound track in the anime

  6. Ok, I'm not sure if this will be seen, but something I've been noticing with this series is that Mark just sounds "down." I'm not hearing the joy or excitement that has been present in every review to date. He seems rather clinical and measured at all times, until the end of this episode. He gets that old energy back for a moment, but it's gone immediately. I know this review brings a lot of external pressure, but I hope Mark can find that excitement soon. His reviews were always fun, even when he hated the material. I just don't hear that here.

  7. Mayuri Kurotsuchi in the anime is voiced by Ryūsei Nakao who voices Freeza in DBZ. This helps crank up how sinister he comes across at first for anyone who might have seen DBZ first.

  8. Not gonna lie, but I’ve always preferred how creepy and chilling post-twist Aizen was when he kept the glasses look. Him slicking his hair back made him feel like he was trying way too hard to be a villain, and I’ve never been a big fan of it honestly. Meanwhile, him keeping his kind smile as he’s stabbing his former allies, and spouting off that he killed a girl who practically worshipped him as “an act of kindness”, gave him such a frighteningly sociopathic presence to me.

  9. Renji's definitely my fav character overall. He just makes me happy; I want him to succeed. Now next arc introduces my other fav character who I just want to hug so bad, he also has a dynamic with another character I wish had been explored a bit more. I don't remember much about the HM arc anymore, but I'll always remember him. Too bad his name is friggin hard to spell!

  10. Controversial territory, oh no…..Mark, please, don't review the Bount arc I beg of you my brother in Christ. Go straight to the Espada arc and save filler for a rainy day. I can assure you it's just not worth it lmfao.

  11. The next arcs are so much fun cuz as a Latino, hearing words ik other than English and "baka" is SOOO REFRESHING. Without saying too much, Kubos reference and use of the Spanish language (I think Mexico in specific idk) is greatly appreciated and made me continue with the series when it got slow. The outfits, the new moves, the music, the setting, CHAD (OMG I LOVE HOW CHAD IS FROM MEXICO AND PART OF HIS CHARACTER AND NOT JUST BRIEFLY HINTED ). So that's dope, not many animes do that. too bad they are villains but at least they were super fleshed out.

  12. You want to talk about Kenpachi? Ichigo has an impalement counter that beats out Dante from DMC by a mile. Bleach characters are built different. But it's actually not too hard to tell when an attack does significant damage. At least as long as you aren't using Kenpachi since the more damage he takes, the more he rnjoys a fight.

In Bleach, Spirit Energy is equal to life force, so Captains in general and characters like Ichigo can seriously take a beating. Plus it depends on hiw damage is presented. A charred looking arm might look super bad, but if they can move said arm, there's a lot less damage than it appears. Kubo too a lot of inspiration from 80's manga like Fist of the North Star, Saint Seiya, and the like.

  13. Someone probably already said this but when Mark mentioned Ichigo’s getsuga tensho being able to reach Byakuya’s “moon” it made me remember how Ichigo’s sword is named Zangetsu, literally meaning “slashing the moon” once again referencing the unreachable moon of Byakuya.

  14. 25:00 Spot on.
29:00 Spot on again. More than you know.
So, we've seen the ending of the entire manga and I think I can say this and not say it's a spoiler. We still don't really know if Byakuya or Kyouraku are stronger than each other. The thing about the captains is that they're all pretty much equal. With Toshiro maybe being the weakest, for reasons. Genryuusai is certainly the strongest as the head. But other than that, they're all so very close to each other that they're within like 1-2% of each other. Certain factors come in to play that may make them better fighters for certain opponents though. Kubo wrote his fights like that. Kubo can write Kyouraku and Kenpachi to seem like absolutely dominating forces that also dominate someone else but sometimes the reality is their skillset wouldn't work on someone else another captain could make a show of force against.

As much as it may surprise you to hear, and as much as you despise Mayuri. There may come a day where you're happy to see him. Imagine that shit, eh?

  15. I will forever say, the Aizen plot twist is one of the greatest bait-&-switch moments in Anime history. Such a shame the story goes downhill from here, because the ending to this Arc was arguably the best of the Big 3.

Just a reminder there is a pretty sizeable consensus that Bleach later on fell off from the BigThree.
Yeah, the story telling quality is fluctuating like crazy. Kubo is the Shonenking of "Style over Substance".
It looks cool, it have great moments but often a bit hollow
