So, I play trombone. But I was talking to the horn professor at my college, and he said he had always wanted to start a jazz french horn line instead of trombones in the big band (because they have very similar ranges and sounds.) When he heard an actual jazz horn quartet, he said, "I closed my eyes and thought, 'No. It sounds like a bad trombone section.'" So there you have it. Trombones are just better horns.
