Information about the Big Cat Habitat
Our new £1.5million facility for big cats is on schedule to open in late Spring 2023.
The previous Pride of Blackpool attraction, which housed Amur tigers and African lions, is currently being extended, renovated and renamed to create a state-of-the-art facility designed around the specific need of each species.
Significantly increased indoor space and a larger off-show management area will be complemented by extended external paddocks and improved keeper facilities, which will enable the best possible care for the magnificent animals.
New, larger windows will mean visitors can enjoy panoramic indoor and outdoor views of the lions and tigers.
The residents were moved to other zoos while the work is taking place. Khari the male African lion went to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo and discussions are underway with other UK zoos to decide which lions will be joining him to create a new pride.
Alyona, the female Amur tiger, has taken up residence in a new home at Woodside Wildlife Park in Lincolnshire. A suitable companion is being sought ahead of her return to Blackpool.
Darren Webster, Zoo Director, said: “We are thrilled with the progress on our new and improved facility for our big cats.
“The house and outdoor areas have been meticulously planned out to secure the long-term future of big cat species at Blackpool Zoo.
“It is the latest in a series of significant investments in the last decade and each one improves the environment for our much-loved animals, dedicated staff and valued visitors.
“It marks another very important milestone in the advancements of animal husbandry in recent years.
“We look forward to welcoming Khari and Alyona, along with their new companions, later this year.
