  1. Like a lot of ppl I'm going with Ghostface. One my personal favorites. My wife got ahold of my ghostdini cd and I have seen it seen. The guy did an hip-hop r&b album. Not my favorite live performer though. But, with this group no truly wrong answer

  2. Great discussion. Another ranking I would love to see you guys do is:

    -Scarface
    -Ice Cube
    -Kool G. Rap
    -Chuck D or Rakim

All guys who started in the late-80's, obviously all hugely influential and also representing different parts of the country with their own unique regional sound.

  3. Pharoahe just on another level even amongst these greats. Live show I would rank 1. Pharoahe, 2. Mos Def 3. Ghost. 4. Thought. All incredible and as excellent as Thought is the music and the group all Star with him a part of it whilst the others are the show.

Catalogue: Ghost, Pharoahe, Thought then Mos, I love Ecstatic btw

Guest verses Pharoahe, Thought, Ghost, Mos.

Overall im Pharoahe first overall, then Nas, Common, Thought, Mos Def, 3K, Ghostface, Jay Z, Lupe, Kendrick. Struggling with no place for Pusha T, Big losing out because of longevity.

  4. 1. Black thought (he has a better catalog and a better rapper overall minus the singing)
    2. Mos Def (he's a really good MC and he's the better artist (i.e. not rapper) in this group.
    3. Pharoe Monch (he's the best technical rapper on the list).
    4. Ghostface (he's not the best rapper in Wu-Tang in my opinion and he's not so diverse as an artist).

  5. 1. Ghostface
    2. Pharoahe Monch
    3. Mos Def
    4. Black Thought

My criteria is catalogue and Thought easily has the weakest Solo catalogue out of the bunch. They're all phenomenal emcees, but Ghost is the best story teller, Monch has the best flow, Mos is the most versatile, and Thought is the best lyricist. No wrong answer any way you slice it.

  6. Monch is my favorite of all time. Not only is his wordplay on another level but what he rhymes about it seems like no one else has the mind to think of. Palindrome, Racist, Haile Selassie Karate, 5he Jungle, and so much more. Plus songs like Fight Club and PTSD helped me get through hard times.

  7. You should do an episode on Inspectah Deck being the Goat. He’s the best lead off, he’s a punchline MC, his solo albums are underrated because he didn’t get as much RZA production and he’s in Czarface. There is also a great clip of Method Man being asked his top 5 and he just lists Inspectah Deck 5 times.

  8. 1. Thought
    2. Monch
    3. Ghost
    4. Mos

    My Reasonin':
All four of these MC's is 'above the clouds', meanin' it's a wash for me as far as their accolades, accomplishments, impact, and so on. Each of them is a fundamental contribution to at least one classic solo album and at least one classic group album, not to mention slews of classic singles and other forms of impact that sew them into the core of Hip Hop's legacy. That said, I wouldn't compare nothin' between these four other than who I thought [pun unavoidable] could pack the most lyricism bar for bar. In other words, outside of albums, features, and all that, bar for bar, I got Thought over the other three on this list. Monch is a close but distinct second, and the same goes for Ghost at third and Mos at fourth. Each of these cats could rip a track with their rhymes, but I'd bet my last vinyl record on Thought walkin' away havin' caused the most bloodshed on a bar for bar basis. Can't really miss with anybody on this list, tho!

  9. I only ever saw Mos Def perform live on Dave Chapelle's Block Party, but I didn't need to see much more than that. Yasin might be the best stage performer on there, even over 'Riq.

Black Thought as I writer is just in a class of his own, he doesn't even write his raps, he finds them. If you read Black Thought' lyrics and you go looking for all his references, you'll realise that he is the Charles Dickens and Shakespeare and Moby Dick of this rap shit. As a fan I'd just like to do nothing more, than to just hold and flip through the books that dude wrote in.

Y'all talking about stories? Black Thought frequently tells entire story arcs in three lines, after them three lines hit you feel like you know a brother, beginning, middle and end. The efficiency of Black Thoughts storytelling is actually the best in this medium, for me.

  10. Black Thought: most consistent discography here with his Roots work, great lyricism, flow and delivery, was consistent from the 1990s into the 2010s and has an overwhelming amount of 9s, has also already had one of the best albums of the 2020s

Ghostface Killah: has the best project here with Supreme Clientele, is the most consistent member of his group and has a extremely consistent discography and high production, very unique style of rhyming

Mos Def: Black Star and Black on Both Sides are in the upper echelon of hip-hop projects, The Ecstatic is extremely well done as well, underrated facet for Mos Def is easily how consistent he is on features especially now

Pharoahe Monch: Stress the Extinction Agenda and Infernal Affairs are classics, however, what does Pharoahe have outside of those two projects, not as much consistently high value projects outside of those two, his rhyme style and production dates itself a bit and he didn’t hold his own into the next few decades
