Bill would stiffen penalty for mail theft

Maryland lawmakers are considering a bill that would increase penalties for criminals who steal mail or packages. Last month, an 11 News Investigates two-part report revealed calls for mail theft are skyrocketing across the country. U.S. Postal Service data shows reports of suspicious activity involving checks have soared nationwide in recent years, jumping from almost 286,000 in 2019 to an estimated 742,000 in 2023 — a 160% increase. Last month, House Deputy Majority Whip Karen Toles, D-District 25, sponsored the Porch Piracy Act of 2024 (House Bill 946) that would make mail and package theft a felony with a maximum prison time of five years.
