Regularly asked question
Q) Why are there comments from days ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons https://www.patreon.com/techmoan usually have early access to videos. I’ll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version. If you want to see the videos early too, you can sign up to Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/techmoan

  1. Dalibor Farny is making even bigger ones. (Though I am not sure if he has ironed out the process yet).
He's a generous chap. he sent me a "Blub" clock just for pointing out a glassworking lathe on eBay. (rare horizontal/vertical model)

  2. 1600 bucks for a beautiful handmade clock like that, come on! Absolutely worth it! On top of the fact that you're putting money into artisan's hands. We're at that point in time where everything can be 3D printed but there's nothing like having something that a Craftsman lovingly made that you can own as a functional art piece. I'm definitely going to order one.

  3. I like the concept of that size but I don’t like how crisp the numbers look. The 10 year old one I have In my living room has digits that are fatter and blurrier which look more original to me. My cat flipped out with the horse sound. LOL.

  4. It makes me smile to see the manufacturing of an "obsolete" technology coming back, even in a small way. Sometimes in our quest to make things cheaper and more feature-rich, we lose some charm and beauty along the way. The clearest example is probably the resurgence of mechanical keyboards. Rubber domes may be cheap and good enough most of the time, but they aren't as durable or pleasant to use. Considering the 15 year warranty, I think it's safe to assume the same will prove true of this (admittedly very costly) clock.

  6. Thanks for another pleasurable video @Techmoan! Please check out Dalibor Farny! He runs a small factory in a castle, where he blows glass and mixes gases for his nixie products all while neatly documenting it on his YT channel – absolutely amazing!

  7. Again, for those in the cheap seats, there's no need to wear gloves when handling these or other tubes. The myth comes from the halogen lights for automobiles – which you do need to avoid touching with your fingers. They look similar, so people think you have to avoid touching them with your bare fingers. Hell, watch the video of the guy making them – he touches 'em all the time.

That said, gloves will help you avoid fingerprints. So, at least they're helpful for that. Wearing gloves won't hurt anything, but you don't need to.

  8. Hmmmm, if I had $1,600.00 to just spend…would I rather have a new Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card…or a giant Nixie tube clock?…… I absolutely rather have the clock. It is handmade art that I would absolutely back.

  9. Shame about the exposed circuitry. I know some people go for that, but it's kind of a drag putting the glass case over top and putting the tubes behind more glass. I like the look of the tubes out in the open, but not so much random capacitors and chips. The juxtaposition of modern circuits and analogue tech just doesn't mesh well.
Of course you could always just not put the glass case on, but as mentioned there is live electricity going through it, so there is a bit of danger in leaving it like that. It just seems like a really odd decision. Like it's 80% finished, and they said "eh screw it, just put a glass case over the top".

I also kinda wish there actually was an option to have a bit of flicker to the numbers like in the vid (which is just an artifact of the frame rate). Gives it more of an analogue look to it instead of the immutable static images we see on digital displays these days.
