Biden says time to "pass the torch’" in 1st remarks after ending presidential re-election bid

U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the nation in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, for the first time since he announced that he was ending his re-election bid.

His decision came after fellow Democrats lost faith in his mental acuity and ability to beat Republican rival Donald Trump, following a televised presidential debate last month that raised alarm within the party.

“My vision for America’s future all merited a second term. But nothing, nothing, can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition. So I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s the best way to unite our nation,” Biden said.

“I revere this office, I love my country more,” he added.

Shortly after his Sunday announcement, Biden endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee for the November presidential election. In a post on social media platform X, the 81-year-old president said that he will remain in his role as president and commander-in-chief until his term ends in January 2025.

Meanwhile, Trump, 78, secured the Republican nomination at the party’s July convention in Milwaukee, just days after surviving an assassination attempt at a campaign rally.

  2. For gods sake, why must there be so many rude and disrespectful comments! None of you making these rude comments can be as good as this man and even speak with grace and intelligence. So before making such rude and disrespectful comments think about yourself and how yo7 can measure up to him. Biden has done many great things and none of you can do better than what he has fought through to help Americans come back on top.

  3. Biden forgot to mention that he has provided Ukraine with nearly $200 billion of hard-working Americans' tax dollars, with no clear end in sight. This massive financial commitment raises concerns, especially considering his administration's handling of border issues, which Biden denies. While I prefer the other candidate to take on the leadership role, I believe it’s important to address any individual's challenges with mental health respectfully. Here’s my prediction: once Trump becomes President, the Ukraine war will come to an end within 30 days or so.

  4. He's protecting democracy by lying about his mental condition until he secured all the delegates so that the "democratic" party doesn't have to do that silly election thing and they can just appoint a leader…Nice.

  5. 6:33 "We finally beat big pharma, after all these years" followed by "to lower the cost of prescription drugs for seniors, and I'm gonna keep fighting to make sure we lower the cost for everyone, not just seniors"

Um. . . the only way to "Beat" big pharma, is to make sure your citizens are healthy, so they don't need to rely on drugs at all. Saying you lowered the costs so everyone can afford drugs, is still just furthering the purchase of drugs, which means they still profit.

8:36 "I'd like to thank our great vice president, Kamilla Harris, she experienced, she's tough, she's capable"

Um. . .capable of what exactly?
Last I head she was put in charge of the Border, and its still wide open. And before that she was a prosecutor who withheld evidence.

    And in all fairness, at
9:30 that honestly seemed very heartfelt. I just hope people realize that if they want to "preserve democracy" and stand up for america and all these things, then they need to understand the only way to do that, is by voting Trump, because he has vowed to take down a lot of the institutions that are actively working against the american people.

  7. I’m not American, but I don’t understand the mockery and resentment in the comments. Whether you like him or not, do you not feel the need to respect such a genuine and sincere moment? This speech is an important part of your history. Try to be mature about it, and see it with a patriotic lens! Take it seriously!
