The U.S. President Joe Biden became the victim of trolling yet again on Twitter after a recent video of him claiming to build a railroad from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean went viral. Biden was detailing his administration’s plans at the League of Conservation Voters Annual Capital Dinner on Wednesday. Let’s suspend reality and play with mathematics in the land of Disbelief. As a reference, let’s use the longest bridge in the world, the 104 mile Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in China. It took 4 years to complete and opened in 2011. It cost $8.5 billion, $11.475 billion in 2023 dollars. These are estimated distances but from the Coast of California to Indonesia crossing the Pacific is 8,140 miles. You take a slight left and go south to Jakarta where you then go straight across the Indian Ocean to the coast of Kenya. That’s another 5,252 miles. Estimates are hard because of landfall and zigs and zags of ocean currents so let’s add 2000 miles so we won’t run out of pavement south of Sri Lanka. Total distance would be 15392 miles. Using our reference bridge of 104 miles built in 4 years, this bridge would take 592 years to build at cost of roughly $110 million and some change per mile or about $1.7 trillion dollars. Another variable to consider is this estimate is for a automobile bridge and not a railway. I’m not a civil engineer so there could be subtle differences. Congress would easily appropriate the money and borrow it from China.
At age 80 in 592 years Mr Biden would be 672 years old. Even in these days of rapid advancements in medicine and if he continues to get a Covid booster every 6 months (1,184 booster shots), I just don’t think he’ll make it to see his choo choo dream come true.
