‘Beyond satire’: Cricket Australia receives backlash over Australia Day decision

Sky News host Caroline Di Russo has weighed in on Cricket Australia’s decision to scrap the term “Australia Day” at the upcoming Gabba Test.

Cricket Australia announced it would avoid using the term at Brisbane’s Gabba Test on Friday to acknowledge January 26 has different meanings to different people.

A traditional Welcome to Country ceremony will be conducted on day one of the Test on Thursday, but the ground announcer will avoid the phrase “Australia Day”.

Ms Di Russo called the decision made by Cricket Australia “beyond satire”.

“What I find just totally outrageous about this whole thing is that Cricket was a game that was brought to this country by the British,” she told Sky News host Danica De Giorgio.

“So you’ve got Cricket Australia who is sitting on top of the colonist imperialist sport not wanting to use the word Australia because of connotations in relation to the first fleet landing in Australia.

“I mean to me it is so ridiculous, it is beyond satire.”

  1. This is a pathetic debate, turned political. Who cares which date we celebrate our national day. Most people would not know. The Coalition wants to score some points by pretending to wrap itself in our national flag. A bit like John Howard meeting out troops on their return after sending them to a war on a false premise.
If the date offends our first nations peoples, being a reminder of the date they lost their land, there are other dates we can rejoice in being Australians, as we should. We celebrate Christmas day on 25th December. Why?

  6. Can we sue Cricket Australia for use of the word "Australia" and demand they remove our coat of arms from the Baggy Green? Lets not forget, one of our openers supports the terrorists of HAMAS and stands shoulder to shoulder with those calling for the final solution. So many of the professional class (including the always pointless professional athletes) hate Australia. It's about time we Bud Light these haters into bankruptcy.

  7. After the ACB decision to become involved in social politics, our family had a meeting regarding our future involvement in this "game". As a result I have resigned from all forms of the game. Our 4 sons and daughter will no longer continue to be involved and cease playing all grades starting immediately. This has not been an easy decision, but we feel strongly opposed to this type of wokeism. Shame Australia, shame, you are not my home anymore, just the country I live in.“There is a powerful argument … look at what is happening in America now … as Americans realise with horror what cesspits they have become as a result of wokeism.”

  8. Those who have never experienced or known oppression being the most vocal about the oppression that the oppressed have experienced – liberals only care to play.

Just as Aayan Hirsi Ali has stated, “they need us to defeat us”.

  9. Of all you cricket and tennis supports truely love Australia on the 26th do not turn up to any cricket or tennis match, otherwise you are supporting their woke ideology. The Australian people have done everything to support the indigenous communities, they have even said sorry for something we didn't do. And still not good enough. Or just not enough money for the elite because the indigenous communities haven't benefited throughout the years.

  10. Im over the politeness
Stuff the western attitudes of we listen to all
We need to go with the MAJORITY RULES
these minorities have taken a mile when we offered a yard
It was always argued that we should listen and share
But the minority doent want that
    They want
The minority rule because they make the most noise
We should take the majority back and the majorities voice is the one the government follows
The other in their minorities have abused the right to be heard at all
