Benedict Cumberbatch reads one of Alexei Navalny's final letters

Last month Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic, Alexei Navalny, paid the ultimate price for his beliefs, dying in a West Siberian prison after years of relentless campaigning against corruption and a near-fatal poisoning. By the time of his death, Navalny had been imprisoned for more than two years, during which time he wrote to his supporters and the wider world through letters shared on his social media accounts. This is one of the last messages he wrote.

Benedict Cumberbatch joined us to read it at Letters Live at the Royal Albert Hall on 6th March 2024.

  1. Benedict's voice is so soothing. He reads a letter, written by a person from my reality, Alexei Navalny. It sounds like a sad story from a fictional book and god I wish it was just a story.

I associate Benedict with "the imitation game" movie, someone I'm so far away, someone only exists on screens. Most russians don't really feel in touch with bright western celebrities, they are so unavailable to us, because an average russian can't afford a trip to Europe, doesn't even speak English. It's hard to express why I feel so thankful for this excerpt, and why It left such a strong impression on me.

  2. I'm from Russia. To tell the truth, I too wondered about the other motives of Navalny to return here. And I did not take into account the possibility, that his decision was genuine and driven by inner principles. I probably project my view onto hos actions. But this letter helped me to better understand his motives. Probably, I personally am not ready to face consequences for politics or any country, but being an LGBT person in hostile environment I feel ready to do anything in my power to protect my small queer family

  3. Thank you for understanding us, for supporting us! This means the world to us❤ It hurts so much to live in a criminal country and have no choice, no freedom, and to be criticized continuously for not standing up against the evil, for not becoming martyrs, like him! Well, you know, guys, not everyone can afford that, but it doesn't mean we support this sht😢

  4. Thousand times THANK YOU. Alexei is gone, he was murdered by Putin. Nonetheless, Alexei’s convictions will live on in everyone he’s touched along his dramatic journey toward beautiful Russia. I believe that some day, I hope it is gonna be in near future, we will name the streets and public places after him in Russia without bandits in power, in Russia he dreamt about. Thank you again, Benedict. It means a lot to many.

  5. I just adore how a imperialistical 🇷🇺 politician, who has openly referred to Georgian people as "rats”, participated in Nazi rallies, shielded Russian oligarchs from sanctions, opposed providing Ukraine with ammunition, and generally supported the annexation of Crimea, is now hailed as a hero. Meanwhile, thousands of Ukrainians are being brutally killed daily fighting for their freedom, yet 🇷🇺 opposition cannot even organize a meaningful protest. What is more, hundreds of prisoners of war are enduring brutal torture in Russian captivity, largely ignored by Western media. This has been happening for years (google "Azov POWs" and "Crimean Tatar POWs").

  6. Жесть, там его финансируют. Я думаю 5 мин Кандибобировича стоят очень дорого. Очень похоже, что Навальный это реально забугорный проект. Я вообще сомневаюсь что мистер Шерлок был в России и как-то к ней близок
