These are good Navy occupations that build transferable skills for the civilian world. A lot of aviation companies pay upwards of $38/hr for aircraft mechanic with a relatively high demand, especially if you already have your clearance. Navy A-school/honorable discharge/security clearance = $career$

My first assignment in the Navy was a seaman assigned to VAW-11 in 1966. I watch your videos to compare my memories with the present. So much has changed and it’s amazing. For instance my first time on carrier quals my rack was on a deck below a hatch. I had a chief stop and show me how to tie my bed and mattress to a metal frame, “the rack”. I am happy to see many young women working along with the guys. They are talented and fantastic members of the Navy family.

Someone once told me the Navy has spare planes on board and all that's needed to be done is to assemble them. Extra wings and flaps I can understand, but extra fuselages?? This person was not in the Navy, he was a civilian worker assigned to a carrier.

I was on the carrier Constellation and the engine shop would run repaired jet engines off the fantail. It did nothing to the ship's speed if anything.
They silenced the guy who made the hydrogen engine and put the tech in the ships? Wonder why they never have to refuel 🧐🤔
My first ship was the first "supercarrier", the USS Forrestal CV-59, 81-83. Called a supercarrier because it was the first class built with an angle deck, which allowed for launch and recovery simultaneously. I was there for her 82 Med/IO cruise and then took her into the yards in Philly for SLEP. I was a radar ET, all of our equipment was off the ship for the yard period (mine gone to mothballs, SPS-43A), so we all got other assignments. My first was the Fire Watch division as a supervisor. Our office was the Jet Engine Shop on that ship, which was located at the aft end of the hangars, with hatches opening aft to free space, which is where they would fire off the engines for testing. And, those engines had as much effect on the ship as the blast hitting the JBDs does. Nil. Compared to the mass of the ship, it's completely insignificant.
Obviously, things have changed since those days. We didn't have LED lighting or laptops, for example. We technically had three hangar bays, but it's really one huge space, two decks high. The hangar bay was deck 1, the main deck. Decks 01 and 02 were mostly in the sides of the hangars or forward of them. Deck 03 was sandwiched between the hangars and the flight deck. The flight deck was the 04 level. Most of my work, my radar space, and the radar shop were in the island, on the 05 and 06 levels.
I was ship's company, so I wasn't involved in any of the aircraft maintenance, but I did work with AIMD on occasion. They had nicer tools than we had. At one point, I had to remove the rotary joint from my radar's antenna pedestal because it was full of water (long story, associated gear, another "tech") and took it to them to run through an ultrasonic cleaner for me. Their shops were forward of the hangar bays, on the same deck as I recall.
I've noticed more modern carriers have the island set farther back than the Forrestal did. And, I can personally attest to one reason that's a good idea, even if it's not the reason for the change. I have first hand experience as to where the jet blast coming off the JBD for the cat just in front of the island, goes. It hit the bridge and signal bridge on that carrier. There was a commercial harbor nav radar mounted on a narrow catwalk above the bridge windows, below the signal bridge, thereabouts. We were up there to do maintenance during flight ops. However, just as we lifted the dome off the radar (about 3' or so diameter), they launched from that cat. And we got hit by the blast, nearly ripping the dome out of our hands.
To put that in perspective, we were on about the 09 level, or 5 decks above the flight deck. We aborted that job until a better opportunity (i.e., the rare no flight ops moment).
I'll also mention that, in our case, the area of the flight deck outboard of the island was called the "bomb farm", because that's where they'd stage munitions before loading them on aircraft in preparation for launch. My berthing was directly below that area, with a JP5 pump station fore and aft of us, the stacks inboard of us, and basically air and water below us. In the first days I was told, if you hear a bump overhead, don't worry about it. If anything actually happened, you wouldn't hear it. If lucky, you'd wake up in the water.
Still, that was better than the berthing that was located just below the arresting gear, with the machinery rooms on either side.
No wonder an aircraft carrier costs in the billions of dollars to build. It is like an entire small city, totally self sufficient. Would like to see the size of the kitchen and dining room.

When I was in the AF as a jet engine mechanic, all engines were sent to Test Cell, for test and trimming before put onto the ready line. Nothing out of the ordinary on the carrier.
