The famous American abstractionist, creator of the unusual technique of so-called drip painting Jackson Pollock (1912 – 1956) died in a traffic accident, which he himself provoked.

That fateful evening Pollock and his companions were about to go to a party. The artist was already drunk, but nevertheless got behind the wheel and drove at top speed down the highway. He lost control of the car on the first curve and the car crashed into a tree, overturned, and tumbled to the ground. Ruth Klingman was thrown from the car; she was virtually uninjured. Edith Metzger was under the car and crushed to death. Pollock was also thrown from the car, he flew twenty meters and hit a tree. He died instantly.

Perhaps Lee Krasner, his wife, who was in Paris, was subconsciously expecting bad news the whole time, for when she got the call, she only looked at the phone and said: “Jackson is dead,” without even picking up the phone.
