BBC Proms 2022: Sir Simon Rattle and the LSO _ HD
Sir Simon Rattle makes an emotional appearance at the Proms at the helm of the London Symphony Orchestra.
In a deeply personal program, Sir Simon and the orchestra perform Mahler’s mighty Second Symphony, ‘Resurrection’ – a musical odyssey on an epic scale – to a sellout crowd at the Royal Albert Hall.
The work has been indelibly linked with Sir Simon since he first rose to prominence as a student conductor when he was just a teenager.
A moving tribute to Sir Harrison Birtwistle, who died earlier this year, opens the concert. His rousing Donum Simoni MMXVIII was a musical gift composed specially for Sir Simon and the London Symphony Orchestra in 2018.

As good as this is, LSO is not BPO- Rattle’s 2010 release of Mahler 2 is legendary. This is a fine performance live however, and has moments that are out of this world. Overall solid, but unfair to compare. That being said, I wasn’t expecting the ending of movement 1, I was shocked but love it nonetheless. Every previous recording of rattles he’s taken it much slower. So, that was cool. I’m impressed with the brass as well in this, very solid, and great sound. Not perfect, than again not even a BPO live performance is! There were some glaring mistakes. But put aside, I commend the Soprano, she was so believable. The choir was decent too. This is so hard to put together for a live performance. This is a real challenge, even for world class musicians (performers). I listened all the way nonetheless, because I believe sir Simon Rattle to be a legend. And, if I have a chance to listen to a new recording of my favorite symphony of all time, well, I’ll take it! I praise the first violinist, the gentleman was on his game. And again, there were real moments that shone. The duet section between the sop. And mezzo was glorious, all parts were on point! Something about the size of Royal Albert Hall seems to be A challenge for any orchestra. Also the timpanist is incredible! And the organ in this hall is superb! My favorite part! The ending was incredible. It may not have the worlds greatest acoustics, but, it sure is beautiful. Long live Mahler, long live Sir Simon Rattle, the biggest take away from BBC proms 2022, this was the Super Bowl, let me say!!!
I was privileged to be there for this amazing concert.
There was something in air that night, a tangible energy amongst the five thousand strong audience, even the bricks of this old and beautiful building seemed alive and to shine like a musical lighthouse.
Inspiration, in-spiritus lifted the Resurrection symphony's message of eternal and everlasting life, love, hope and peace to stratasferic heights that I had rarely witnessed before.
I don't know whose version is "the best" but in my humble opinion, no one present at this concert will ever forget it and it will remain indelibly etched on my heart and soul forever.
