general context: if you’re wondering, “what is histrobea chronicles?”

i’m the main arranger and a composer for hoops’ upcoming video game project, histrobea chronicles!! think pokemon meets kingdom hearts (as I’ve had it pitched to me), 2D sprite open-world RPG vibes, wild west steampunk-y setting. my personal goal for the OST is to make as many tracks as i can as catchy as possible, and enjoyable in their own right. i’m largely happy with the result and can’t wait to share the whole thing ~

my exact duties often include arranging hoops’ original concept demos and translating or (sometimes dramatically) reinterpreting them into a more convincing retro vgm type style. i compose some tracks completely from scratch based on direction as well. it’s the first time i’ve worked so closely with someone else on their vision for so long of a stretch and on such a scale. i’ve learned and continue to learn a lot through the whole process! it’s been a worthwhile experience overall. thanks for the patience and support until its release 😀

~ some commentary on this specific tune ~

this is the battle theme you hear when fighting against other histrobea wranglers. 🤠 you didn’t think histrobea chronicles only had area themes, did you?

i didn’t have a demo this time, just the prompt “pokémon-style battle theme, but wild west vibes”. much prefer to be at the reigns for battle themes, anyway. turns out, early pokemon battle music is already somewhat “sphagetti western stand off” vibes so the concept came together quickly–just leaned into that idea a little harder. i used gsc johto trainer battle as my main inspiration along with traditional mexican standoff music from various films. also angel attack evangelion lol. it was really fun to have total creative freedom with the writing, as a result it’s probably one of my favourite battle themes in the soundtrack. just a pleasent experience to make overall.

the hardest part was getting the climax to be exciting enough. it sounds a little emotional actually, but i think thats just the emdasche battle music way lol. an accordion shows up there, and you’ll hear the same one throughout the soundtrack–it kind of feels like the histrobea chronicles signifier to me, at this point. quirky soundfont accordion just gotta be the best synth out there fr fr fr

the region motif shows up somewhere in here, too. can you find it? 🤔
