This is a cover of Battle by Tsukasa Masuko from Shin Megami Tensei. I have remade the track in the style of Shoji Meguro’s rock battle tracks around the PS2 era of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona games, as if Shin Megami Tensei released on the PS2 in the mid to late 2000s.

It’s been some time since I’ve done a traditional Shoji Meguro PS2 cover and I know that’s what plenty are here for. I’ve had some requests here and there for some classic SMT, and I thought you can’t get more classic than the SMT 1 battle theme. There are dozens of versions of this theme from across the franchise, but I’ve taken the most inspiration from the original Super Famicom version with a section from the version in Shin Megami Tensei NINE. This theme is non-stop energy and super fast paced. I wanted to make sure to capture that first and foremost and thought to take inspiration from Boss Battle from the Devil Summoner Sound Collection. It helps that Tsukasa Masuko and Shoji Meguro’s style aren’t too terribly different in terms of instruments, so that means guitars at the forefront. Aside from some organ and some very fast paced drums and bass, there really isn’t anything else to mention here. Other than that the main melody is not the most fun thing to play. The track is very short, so I thought to take the opening section from Last Boss Battle 2 in SMT NINE to mix things up a bit. I thought about incorporating some parts of the (many) versions from SMT Imagine, but they are all fairly straight forward covers. The Super Famicom version of SMT 1’s soundtrack is also tuned fairly sharp, so I’ve done the same with this cover.

Of course, Meguro’s signature guitar tone is always the most important element of these remixes, for a more detailed breakdown of how I recreated it, I’d advise checking out the description for the cover of An Honour Befitting That Name I made here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rgcr6DbXyZE

It’s been several years since I played through SMT 1, but I really enjoyed my time with it. Classic SMT is strangely addicting, and this game might have it the best. I strongly encourage SMT fans who haven’t played it to try and stick with it, it’ll give you a greater appreciation of the franchise.

Thanks for listening!

  1. That added bit at the end felt like it would work really well as a start up point for the track mid-fight, like after failing a negotiation and the fight starting again. Would be really cool mechanically!!!

  2. as one of the very few genuine NINE enjoyers (there are five of us) that thing you did at the end + the track taking so many cues from that game's version of this track made my heart feel full
