The Battle of the Philippine Sea would become the largest carrier battle ever. With the Grumman F-6F Hellcat now the dominant fighter in the skies of the Pacific, the Japanese Zeros will face a pummeling, destroying the Imperial Japanese Navy’s ability to conduct large scale carrier operations again. The one sided air battle will become known as The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.

  1. USS Yorktown – "We've got a dozen fires, our engines are out, flight deck is crippled, munitions room is ruptured and in danger of blowing, and we're listing" ~ It'll buff, do what we can and resume flight operations.
Also USS Yorktown – "Damage sustained has gotten too great from repeated strikes, abandon ship" ~ Proceeds to not sink because fuck it
Meanwhile Taiho – "We've got damage to our fuel tanks, no fires, all engines are working, flight deck is good to go" ~ Proceeds to blow the fuck up.
Japanese damage control was such a fucking joke.

  2. 11:35 – "uses his superior maneuverability" against a Japanese Zero. What a Boss. Those zeros were the best planes in the early war.

Edit: I just listened further and the narrator says the same thing.

  3. Good vid, but why does the animation have a Task Force 17 ("TF17") shadowing the Japanese fleet from Tawi Tawi? TF 17, centered around single carriers throughout its existence, was nowhere near Tawi Tawi. Given its size, it would've been suicidal to send such a small force so deep in enemy waters.

  4. It is interesting to look at why were the Americans so much more efficient than the Japanese with 10 to 1 loss ratio. Is it because the technology the Americans used was vastly superior? Maybe superior situational awareness? I'm really curious because such results can't be expected even from the biggest optimists.

  5. Aggressor or not, this is just sad to watch, even knowing what was going to happen. It's not even really a battle, a battle requires two fighting forces. The Japanese were so busy looking for the "decisive battle" that they completely missed how that battle had come and gone long ago. In hindsight its a complete failure on all command levels for the Japanese, from the admiral to the airgroup leaders to the damage control officers.

  6. I had a basic knowledge of what the Mariana's Turkey Shoot was, because of my joy for learning about WW2 history. But I enjoy this channel every week because of the little small bits of history such as a soldier's comment or in this case a pilot's comment. The pilot who said its like a turkey shoot. I learned something knew all the time thanks to this channel. Also, outstanding animation of all the planes!

  7. So the Americans made a successful landing while defending it against an 'ambush attack' and subsequently counter-attacked so hard that the US decimated the Japs ambushing fleet?

This is, beyond all doubts, top tier S TIER content!
