Bass Teacher REACTS | "Symphony of Destruction" – Megadeth | David Ellefson

Even in one of Megadeth’s more “single-y” and commercial tracks, there are STILL some brilliant nuances in the bass parts. In this episode, I’ll take you through exactly WHY simple 8th notes make or or break a song verse, HOW you can completely re-shape a chord progression by flipping the chord progression on its head, and the story of how David Ellefson saved my life in 2014 by steering a bus back on the highway after almost going off of a cliff. True story.

  1. Sometimes the simplest riffs are not only the most rocking but fun to play… especially live. You can run and jump around while playing not suffering with intricate complex riffs that leave you standing still.

  2. Hey Mark, the changing of the root note is amazingly performed all the time by U2s Adam Clayton. He was sponsored by Warwick I think, but man can he change the feel of a song!

  3. One of the reasons I like Megadeth more than any other Thrash band is the fact David's bass is present in most of their songs. Dave's riffs allow "Jr's " bass lines to be heard by playing riffs which at not always the first five power cords on the low 'E' string. Just today, I was listening to my early Metallica playlist (Yes I love Megadeth, but I still like a number of Metallica songs, even if Dave did not write them 🤣) and I either could not hear or could just sometimes hear the bass. Cliff Burton was a great bass player, too bad you can't hear his work unless you listen to 'Anesthesia'. Yes, I am exaggerating a bit but….
